Nursery Air Purifier: Protect Your Newborn

Expectant parents-to-be often hustle to prepare the new family member's room.

They agonize over proper nursery decor and furniture: everything must make the new one feel loved and stimulate baby's development. They would never dream of bottle-feeding their new bundle of joy.

But the new kid's room is splashed with fresh paint, and new carpets are installed. A fresh varnished or plastic crib is lined with the newest synthetic flame retardant treated mattress and blankets. Diapers, pajamas, pacifiers, and stuffed toys are thoughtfully staged.

Please do your new arrival a favor: spare the toxic chemicals. Love your baby by providing a safe, non-toxic nursery.

The problem of toxic chemicals in baby products came to the fore a few years back when Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) surfaced.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) outgassing from fresh paint, carpeting, furniture, and new bedding pose serious risk.

Airborne particles are most hazardous to developing lungs, and are associated with SIDS.

Since the nursery is empty, now is a good time for environmental evaluation. If the home is older than 1978, it could have lead based paint. If this is the case, absolutely do not sandpaper the room. Lead abatement is a job for professionals.

Are central air ducts clean? Air filters on the furnace upgraded from standard (cheap) fiberlass?

Carpet should be evaluated for toxic emissions, and replaced with non toxic varieties or beautiful hardwood. The term "rug ratz" wasn't invented for nothing. Babies and pets cohabit the dirtiest part of every home, the floor. Most carpets are toxic and impossible to get clean.

When you are sure the room is safe, a nursery air purifier should be installed. The brand most prominently marketed as being suitable for "bebe" is just the opposite. Your infant's room should have the best air purifier in the house. One without ozone or other questionable technologies.

A baby nursery is no place for oxidant technology based air purifiers, even photocatalytics or plasma ionizers should be excluded.

Time honored HEPA air filters with significant weights of added activated carbon (for chemical vapor control) are the ticket here, and will not come cheaply. Any ultraviolet (UV) germicidal add-ons should be premium quality: inexpensive UV is ozone prone.

Any ionizer should be ozone free, which excludes the majority.

Recommended nursery air purifiers: IQAir, Allerair, and Austin Air.

You can save yourself and your new loved one so much heartache by raising a toxfree child. A truly clean nursery, your love, and a quality air purifier give a new life a fair chance.

Inexpensive Comfort Found In Portable Air Conditioners

Portable air conditioners are air conditioning units that can be moved easily from place to place. They use electricity to run and are convenient options for areas where you want air conditioning but do not have central air installed. A great place to put portable air conditioners is the garage. Garages are generally used to store items and to stow cars away from the elements. However, some garages have work benches and are used for crafts. Some garages are used for game rooms so children or adults can have a bit of a hideaway area in which to play pool, watch television or play darts. Because garages are not generally installed with central air, an air conditioning unit will need to be added to the garage or portable air conditioners can be used instead.

Portable air conditioners range in price depending on the model and the size. They will typically start out at approximately three hundred dollars and can range up to approximately seven hundred dollars. You will need to measure the area of the room in which you want a portable air conditioner. The larger the area, the larger the size of the air conditioner you will want to use. Having portable air conditioners allows you the flexibility to move it from place to place and cool areas of the home where no air conditioning is present.

Portable air conditioners are also good in homes where there is no central air. Many areas of the country have houses that were built without central air because of the climate and lack of need for it. However, with changing climate conditions, some older homes do not have central air but the area of the country has gotten warmer. While it may not have been necessary to have air conditioning several decades ago, it is quite uncomfortable not to have it now. In such areas, portable air conditioners are the ideal choice and much less expensive than installing a complete air conditioning system. You can purchase portable air conditioners at most home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowes. You can also shop online using the Internet to conduct a search.

Make It Start with a Door Switch – Dishwasher Repair

You wouldn't even know your dishwasher had one until it isn’t working. These little switches are tucked inside the control panel of your dishwasher and most times are a part of the door latch. The door latch pulls the door securely to the main body of your dishwasher and prevents water from leaking during a cycle. If your dishwasher doesn't start, it could be due to a faulty door switch.

How the door switch works

When the dishwasher door is open, the switch is off. Inside your dishwasher tub will be a metal or plastic prong. Close and latch the door. The prong will depress the door switch completely and the circuit will close allowing the dishwasher to start. Check the prong to make sure it's not loose or bent and it's properly activating the door switch.

It is important to disconnect the dishwasher from its power source before attempting any repair. You can unplug the dishwasher from the outlet, remove the fuse from your fuse box, or flick the breaker switch on your circuit panel. This will prevent you from getting an electric shock.

What a door switch looks like and where it's located

Typically a dishwasher door switch is an inch long. It can be black or red and has metal prongs called terminals protruding from the body. Some door switches have two terminals and some have three.

The terminals can be a common terminal (COM), normally closed terminal (NC) or a normally open terminal (NO). Switches with only two terminals will either have a COM and a NO, or a COM and an NC. Door switches with three terminals have COM, NC, and a NO.

Your dishwasher's door switch will be behind the control panel on the front of the unit. It may be necessary to remove the inner panel of the door first. You can do this by removing a few screws. The screws at the bottom of the door are for the hinges. You do not need to remove the whole door for this repair.

Once the inner panel is removed you may find another smaller panel covering the back of the control panel held in place with screws or clips. By removing this panel you will gain access to the latch assembly housing the door switch.

How to remove the switch

Carefully use needle nose pliers to pull the wires leading from the harness off the terminals. For door switches that have a locking clip, depress the lever as you gently pull the harness away from the terminal.

Take your time while removing switches that are a part of the latch assembly or that have a bracket. If you rush and break the switch's housing you will end up having to replace more parts.

How to test your door switch

Use an ohmmeter to test the switch for continuity. This test is for door switches with three terminals.

1. Set your ohmmeter to measure resistance at a scale of Rx1.
2. Touch the metal tips of the test leads together and zero your ohmmeter by adjusting the thumbwheel in the front of the meter until the needles reads "0" on the scale.
3. Touch one meter lead to the COM terminal and the other lead to the NO terminal. Do not push in on the actuator.
4. Your meter should give a reading of infinity, meaning the circuit is open, and there is no continuity.
5. Without moving the meter's leads, press down on the actuator until you hear a 'click'.
6. With the 'click' of the actuator, the meter should produce a resistance reading of zero ohms. This means the circuit is closed and continuity is present. (You will only hear this click with a door switch with three terminals.)
7. Keep the meter lead that is touching the COM terminal in place, but move the other meter lead from the NO terminal to the NC terminal.
8. When the actuator is released, you should receive a resistance reading of zero ohms.
9. Now set your ohmmeter to its highest resistance scale and touch one meter lead to the NO terminal and the other meter lead to the NC terminal.
10. The resistance reading between these two leads should be infinite.
11. Finally take a resistance reading from both the NC terminal and the NO terminal to any metal mounting hardware that is a part of the switch assembly. You should receive a normal reading of infinity.

Any readings that differ from the tests above are signs of a defective door switch that will need to be replaced.

My Dishwasher is Not Starting - What Can It Be?

The dishes are in the dishwasher and you close the door. You hit the start button and nothing happens. What now?

First make sure the dishwasher is getting power. Check your fuse box for blown fuses. If you have circuit breakers, check to see if they are tripped. Make sure plug from your dishwasher is secure in the outlet.

If power is not the problem, take a closer look at some of the electrical parts of your dishwasher. The most common part to fail is the door switch.

A door switch is used to start and stop your dishwasher. It's a safety feature that won't allow water to flow with the door open. With a faulty door switch, there is a chance your dishwasher won't start at all.

Dishwasher door switches are about an inch long. They are usually black but can be red. There are metal prongs on the body of the switch called terminals. Some door switches have two terminals and some have three.

If your door switch is OK, check the timer assembly. This controls when and how long power is sent to other controls on your dishwasher. If these controls don't receive power, they won't work.

The timer assembly contains a motor. Check this motor as well. It is often cheaper just to replace the timer motor rather than the complete assembly.

My last suggestion is to check the cycle selector switches. These switches indicate cycles for washing, drying, and setting the temperature of the water. If one of your switches is the problem your dishwasher may not start.

Dishwasher cycle selector switches tell the timer which cycle to run by opening and closing electrical circuits. Most selector switches are six to eight inches long. They are usually black and have terminals.

Basic Appliance Repair Tips

Appliance repairs often strike at the most inopportune times. Unfortunately, they can leave a gaping wound in your budget, if you don't plan for them. Here are a few ideas and tips to consider, that will help ease your next appliance repair problem.

Before You Do It Yourself

Make sure the appliance isn’t covered by a service agreement or warranty. If it's still covered under warranty, you will need to find out how to use the warranty properly. First call the company offering the warranty and ask them for clarification on using the warranty properly (DO NOT void the warranty by trying to fix the appliance yourself). After that, your next step is to contact (or take) the appliance to an appropriate maintenance or service company. Have them do the repairs under the protective cover of your warranty. Also, you should make sure you are properly reimbursed for all charges after having your appliance repaired.

Do It Yourself

If there is no warranty or coverage on your appliance, your next step is to track down the owner’s manual, and try and make the repair yourself. You shouldn't repair an appliance without having the service manual with you. When the manual or warranty isn't an option, your next choice will be to look under the lid, or inside of the appliance, and find the basic instruction guidelines. Most appliances have a small set of operating instructions, printed on the appliance somewhere, which MIGHT help you solve your problem. For most of us, though, these steps probably won't be enough.

Finding an Appliance Repair Service Company

If you aren't able to make the repairs yourself quickly and easily, then you will need to find an appliance repair service to do the job right, and get your appliance working again. There are several ways you can find an appliance repair company in your area. You can...

1. Hunt down and dust off that huge yellow pages book, lying somewhere in the dark, outer recesses of your home.

2. Ask a friend or family member who they use for their appliance repairs

3. Visit www.LocalApplianceRepair.com and find an appliance repair service in your city, with just a couple of mouse clicks.

4. Visit an online directory, like Yahoo's ™ yellow pages

5. If you’d like input from an independent source, on reliable local appliance repair companies, call a major real estate firm (in your area) and ask who they use for their appliance repairs.

Appliance Repair Services

A majority of repair companies have technicians available who can repair most household appliances. Major appliance repair companies will typically make service calls to your home. Small appliances often get repaired at the local repair shop, instead of at your home. If it's a small appliance, you want to make sure they offer repair or replacement services for it. This would include items such as microwave ovens, oven fans, heaters, Kitchen aid ™ mixers, other small miscellaneous kitchen appliances, and maybe even power tools.

Questions to Ask Repair Companies

Once you have the names of a few appliance repair service companies, you may want to ask any or all of these questions when you call...

1. Ask when the soonest they can come out to make the repair? If the timing is adequate, ask how punctual they are (and if they have a guarantee on the time)? There's nothing worse than waiting all day for a repair that won't happen that day.

2. Ask if they offer a guarantee on their work and their parts?

3. Ask about a written estimate; service call charge; fees; or a combination of written estimate with final bill?

4. Ask if it is possible to add service call fees to your monthly utility bill.

5. Gas, electrical, radiation, and refrigeration repairs require special considerations. Qualified Repair technicians must have experiences with gas, electrical, and refrigeration issues. When they repair gas appliances and microwave ovens, appliance repair technicians need to be aware of dangers form gas and radiation leaks. When you need to have your stove fixed or your gas lines checked for leaks, you definitely want to call a home appliance repair person for help. Mostly, just make sure they are qualified to fix the specific appliance you need repaired.

6. If you're interested, you can ask them if they offer a monthly service plan. Having a consistent appliance repair technician and service can keep your home appliances humming right along, and may also help prevent unwanted breakdowns. This would give you peace of mind for all your major home appliances, and keep all your appliances protected under one convenient repair plan. You can also ask questions, which might include concerns about appliance installation, operation and repair.

Selection and Installation - Air Conditioning Unit

When choosing the correct air conditioning for your home, consider various options before making a final decision. There are permanent models, as well as portable air conditioning units that you may use to cool your home. The small window models are easier to install than a large unit, which may require the help of a professional.

If you find yourself without a central air conditioning unit, you could be miserable during the summer months. You can save yourself the misery by installing a small, and very manageable, single room air conditioning unit. Many homeowners choose to install such a unit in their bedroom, but that’s completely up to you. You can choose between an air conditioning unit that is removable for your window, or you may opt for a permanent installation in your wall. A portable window unit is the easiest to install and you will be glad to know that you won’t have to make any holes in your wall because most units just use a regular electrical outlet.

Before purchasing your window air conditioning unit, measure your window to ensure that you get one that fits perfectly. If possible, choose a window that is already near an outlet as this will save you from having to use extension cords.

Installation Of A Window Air Conditioning Unit

When you’ve purchased the perfect air conditioning unit, remove it from the box and follow the installation instructions. Your new air conditioning unit should include mounting hardware, which will need to be attached to your window. It’s important to read, and follow the instructions carefully. If mounting hardware is installed incorrectly, the air conditioning unit may fall from the window and cause damage to whatever lies in it’s path, not to mention the certain damage of the unit itself.

Now, you are ready to place the air conditioning unit into place. Open the window high enough to allow you room to place the unit and also some extra room for your arms to move without hitting the window.

It may be a good idea to have someone help you during this step, in order to hold the window open and to allow you the convenience of an extra pair of hands should the unit be difficult to balance during installation. Your new air conditioning unit should have handles for easy manageability, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Make sure that the air conditioning unit sits properly into the mounting hardware and then close the window onto the air conditioner. Pull out the extensions, which should be located on the side of the unit, in order to close the openings between the unit and each side of the window. Once everything is in place, secure each extension to the sash according to the instructions.

Before wrapping up, look for a foam strip that should be included with your air conditioning unit. This product is used to fill the air gap in the window. As you finalize the installation, make sure that the air conditioning unit is secured in position using it’s mounting brackets and plug in the unit once you have completed every step as outlined in the owner’s manual.

It’s important to realize that each unit may be different and, therefore, each may have small variations in installation. By reading your owner’s and installation manual carefully, you will ensure a quick and easy installation. A window air conditioning unit should take 1-2 hours to install and is a recommended do-it-yourself project.

Repair Of An Installation Air Conditioning Unit

If your new air conditioning system is not functioning properly, unplug it immediately. Begin by reading through the troubleshooting section of your owner’s manual. If your system is under warranty, call the manufacturer, whose name and contact number should be listed in the manual. If the system is no longer covered under any kind of warranty, you may wish to call an air conditioning professional or simply replace the unit altogether. It is often more expensive to pay for repairs of an item than it would be to purchase a completely new air conditioning unit.

Best Placement for Window Air Conditioners

Which is the best room for placement of an air conditioner?

It should be installed wherever it will give you and your family the most comfort.

If you only have one air conditioner then we usually suggest the bedroom. This is because most people find that if they can sleep comfortably during a hot summer night then their next day’s work will be a lot easier.

Consequently, getting through your regular workday routine becomes a lot easier knowing there is an air conditioner at home. You know you will be able to go home after work and relax and unwind in the comfort of a room of cool air. It certainly becomes something to look forward to, all day long.

Not everyone will want to install the air conditioner in the bedroom. Some people do not like a cool sleeping environment. Therefore these types will tend to place it in a living room or family room.

The elderly in particular seem to prefer the living room for their air conditioners. This is because since many of them are retired, they spend most of their time in the living room. During the hottest days of summer they may not leave their homes for days. Therefore being able to enjoy the day in a cool environment becomes more important to them than being cool at night.

Some people will place the air conditioner in the family room. They install it there because it is larger than any single bedroom. For this reason the whole family can sleep there without feeling confined. Consider getting out the sleeping bags and turn it into an adventure for the young ones. Beats installing it into the master bedroom and then waking up in the morning to find a dog, cat, and four kids in the bed with you.

A window air conditioner can be noisy, which may disturb sleep. If you are a light sleeper the bedroom might not be the best placement. Others find the drone of the fan actually promotes sleep. Once most people become used to the sound of the air conditioner they begin to find it soothing. This is because all the neighbourhood noises are drowned out. Some people say the air conditioner works as well as a sleeping pill.

...Air conditioners will not cool other rooms...

Whichever room you eventually pick don’t expect the impossible from you’re A/C. It is not meant to cool more than one room or one open area.

This is because the blower in a window air conditioner is not very powerful. It is sized to cool one open area, not a number of interconnected rooms. Therefore a couple of smaller units may be better for your home than one large unit.

If more than one air conditioner is to be installed it is generally most efficient to place them at opposite end of the home, but on the same floor. Placing one on each floor will only give localized cooling. Instead, try cooling one floor with the multiple units.

Generally the upper floors need more cooling because the warm air within the home will rise.

Another method to try is to run the air conditioners while operating the furnace fan. Set furnace thermostat to 'fan only' setting. Start air conditioners and allow to operate as per normal. This method works well if an air conditioner is operating near the cold air return. Furnace fan will pick up cold air and circulate through other rooms. Normally suggested to close all unnecessary room vents, such as in basement, hallways, and bathrooms.

...Avoid extension cords...

Wherever the air conditioner is placed it will need direct access to an electric wall receptacle. Install the air conditioner so that it is very close to the electric supply.

Do not be tempted to use an extension cord. Do not use a power bar.

If an extension is the only option a proper appliance extension cord must be purchased. An average household extension cord will not work. The air conditioner may initially operate on a household cord but it will damage the compressor. The voltage drop within an average cord is too high. This will force the air conditioner to start at a reduced voltage.

Air Conditioner Maintenance: Don't Forget It

If you are like everybody else in the world, you will want your air conditioner to last as long as possible. These units can be very expensive to replace, so proper air conditioner maintenance is a must. By caring for your unit properly, you will be able to keep it for as long as possible. This will surely save you a couple thousands of dollars throughout the course of your life.

While trying to keep your air conditioner in tip top condition, there are a couple of tips that you will want to follow. They are as follows:

1. Make sure that you check all of the hoses for leaks at least twice a year. The best times to do this is before you turn your unit on for the summer, and just before you are ready to turn it off for the winter. By doing this you will be able to catch onto any problems before they get to be too serious for repair.

2. It is important to keep the outside compressor as clean as possible. Of course it is going to get dirty because of natural occurrences, but by spraying it off with a hose every so often, you will be able to keep it looking new for longer.

3. Have the ductwork cleaned by a professional every couple of years. This maintenance may not seem like a big deal, but it can extend the life of your air conditioner.

4. During the winter months, make sure that you keep the compressor covered. By doing this you will protect it from cold weather as well as harsh conditions such as snow and sleet. When you are buying your air conditioner, ask the installation company if they also have a cover that you can buy. If they do, you should purchase one on the spot. This way you will always have a cover that fits your unit without hassle.

My Vacuum Cleaner - My Best Friend

A Vacuum cleaner is a labor saving device. It is a common household appliance used for cleaning of carpets, sofas, floor, fans, drapes, beds, ceiling etc in homes. It creates a partial vacuum to suck dust, particles, dirt etc. The dirt is collected in a paper bag for later disposal.

The idea for a vacuum cleaner was started by Henry Cecil Booth of England. He first made a vacuum cleaner called the “Puffin Billy” which was run by a petrol driven piston pump. They were large and bulky and were carried on horse driven carts. The hoses were taken through windows to clean the carpets. These were however not commercially viable. The real break to vacuum cleaners was given by James Spangler who invented a vacuum cleaner from a fan, a box and a pillow case. Spangler sold the patent to William Hoover of England who made it a commercial success. Hoover made a fortune out of the invention. In England the vacuum cleaner is still called a Hoover colloquially.

The vacuum cleaner consists of a motor, a fan and a disposable paper bag along with other necessary assemblies. There are different configurations available.

• Cylinder: In this type of vacuum cleaner, the motor, fan and bag are kept in a cylinder which is usually mounted on a wheel trolley. The cylinder is connected to flexible hosepipes. Even though they are not as efficient in cleaning as other models, they are the most popular models in the market.

• Upright: This is a push pull configuration mounted on wheels. The motor is housed in a housing over the fan and the bag is mounted on a handle. They usually have rotating brushes at the end of the handle to brush up dust which can be sucked by the hose, hence they tend to be cleaner. These are usually used by people who do not want to bend while cleaning. They are less maneuverable.

• Wet Vacuum cleaners: These are special types of vacuum cleaners which can clean spillages also. They have reversible air flow for blowing out obstructions and dust. They are also known as wet vacs.

• Centralized Vacuum cleaners: These are housed in the central part of a large building with piping on all floors. The flexible hose can be connected to vacuum points in various parts of the building for cleaning of rooms.

• Special Vacuum cleaners: These include robots and hand held cleaners. The robots have obstacle detecting sensors to clean an entire room without human help. Hand help vacuum cleaners are small portable cleaners for clearing of small spills.

Few things are needed to be considered before buying a vacuum cleaner. Amperage is directly related to the power of the vacuum cleaner. Generally the higher the amperage the better performance. Airflow rate in liters/sec, airflow velocity in miles per hour (mph) and suction capacity in Pascal (Pa) are other specifications which need to be considered. Generally the higher these values are the better cleaning the vacuum cleaner provides. One more element to be considered is whether to buy a bag or bagless vacuum cleaner. The bagless vacuum cleaner provides greater suction power and the container has to be cleared into a garbage can periodically.

Bagged Cleans Better

Recent sales statistics proved bagless vacuums to be the popular choices. It is priced lower and less bulky than bagged varieties. The infomercials that are so popular in home shopping channels are doing their jobs perfectly. But are bagless vacuums really better than bagged ones? Bagless vacuums claim of having better airflow than vacuums with vacuum bags. They also claim to aid the lowering of production costs since the need to buy a vacuum bag is eliminated. But these are from infomercials, they are made to promote bagless vacuums. But there are several important things left unsaid. Read up and find out why you shouldn't ditch your bagged vacuum.

Let us explore the production costs. Vacuum cleaners do not suck up dirt by magic. They use air to suck the dirt in and pass it through their filter and to the collecting contraption. Even bagless vacuum designs do this. In time, the filters of bagless vacs need changing due to use and long wear. It would cost just as much to replace a worn HEPA filter and to buy disposable Eureka vacuum bags or Hoover vacuum bags. Though there are HEPA filters guaranteed not to wear out, they come with a price and at the cost of your time. Whereas you just pull out the bag from bagged vacs and throw it in the trash, these bagless filters require cleaning effort especially if you don't want to damage your filter. To maintain bagless vacuums functional at top form, you basically have to empty dirt cups when full. You also have to clean out the filter either by dusting, brushing, tapping, or washing depending on the detailed cleaning instructions that usually come with these bagless vacs. Think these are too much? You also have to do maintenance cleaning after every 3-4 vacuum sessions. In exchange for the minimal savings from buying a bagless vac, you need to spend time cleaning your cleaning equipment. Throwing and buying a disposable vacuum bag is a small price to pay for buying bagged vacuums.

On to the airflow issue. Bagless vacs claim to be superior in terms of air circulation. Over a short period, the bagless variety has the upperhand. This is while their filters are still new and fresh, but over time, these filters become stuck with dust and dirt. Dirty filters cannot boast of their airflow because the particles weaken the air circulation. You need to either clean the filters or replace them to achieve that superior airflow again. However, in bagged vacuums, all it takes is to change your vacuum bag and your vacuum is as fresh and powerful as new again. The key here is restoration. Restoring a vacuum's air power will ensure better cleaning. Bagless vacuums cleaned every fourth cleaning session only use half or a quarter of their supposed power during the second, third, and fourth time of use.

Air Purifier's Role In Preventing Asthma Attacks

Environmental researchers have proved that the room air we breathe in is more contaminated than the air outside. In fact the air we breathe during our sleep, relaxation at home or office is more polluted and it is this polluted air that makes us fall sick easily.

The ultimate way to solve this problem is getting an air purifier. Air purifiers are helpful to people suffering from asthma and allergies due to pollen grains, mold spores, pet dander, microorganism and bacteria.

Ultra violet air purifier destroys chemical and biological contaminants like viruses, mold, allergens, cigarette smoke, bacteria, diesel fumes, pet odors, construction dust and many other airborne contaminants.

Asthma is a condition characterized by breathing difficulties caused by narrowing of the airways (bronchioles and bronchi) leading to the lungs.

Persons Affected:
It occurs in 3 to 5 percent of all people at some time in life. It affects all age groups except newborn babies and affects both the sexes equally.

Symptoms:
The main symptoms are breathlessness, wheezing cough usually getting worse at night. In a severe attack, the breathing rate increases sharply and pulse rises. The person is not in a position to speak due to breathlessness. The skin may turn blue due to lack of oxygen, known as cyanosis.

Causes:
The usual cause is bronchiole hypersensitivity to foreign substances in the air. The foreign substance could be pollens, air borne pollutants like vehicle emissions, animal fur, smoke, smog, cigarette smoke, ozone, perfumes, hairspray etc,. There is a worldwide increase in the number of asthma patients due to increase in the smoke levels in the cities.

Treatment & Role of Air Purifiers:
The day to day treatment involves management to avoid the trigger which triggers the asthma attack. A person spends most of his time indoors and presence of purified clean air can help a lot in preventing triggering of asthmatic reaction. A purifier works by removing environmental triggers like airborne allergens contaminants, smoke and smog.

A person cannot avoid exposure to polluted air but he can certainly control the environment in his dwelling or work place. Further an air purifier provides relief to the lungs of an asthmatic person by providing clean air so that he can breathe easily.

An air purifier works by cleaning the air indoors and prevent triggers like smoke, smog, pollen, exhaust fumes etc reaching inside the room.

Care should be taken to avoid air cleaners which produce ozone, which rather than reducing asthma may trigger an asthma attack.

Hot BBQ Grills and Items for the Summer

As the spring and summer seasons are upon us, many of us turn our thoughts to being outdoors and firing up the BBQ. If you are BBQ addicted, as many men and women are that we know, you are always looking for an excuse to fire up the grill and try a new recipe or make an old favorite.

For the BBQ connessoir, this is your lucky time of year. This is one of the best times of year to shop for the newest and best BBQ equipment and to surf the web for new BBQ and grilling recipes.

So, go window shopping, but if your old equipment can last a bit longer, you might want to wait before making any purchases. Most stores begin putting out BBQ equipment when there is still 2 feet of snow on the ground. They know how to get you. You are tired of the cold weather and are ready to be outside in your bare feet and shorts hovering over your grill.

As you have this dream of being outside calling you to the store, many of you will pay full price for everything. The trick is to be patient. Just as the stores put these items out early for you to buy, it won't be long before they start putting these items on sale and even clearance. For many stores, July 4th seems to be the magical date. Once this day passes, you will slowly begin to see stores marking down their BBQ and grilling equipment. This means, you might be able to buy a new grill or grilling equipment for 30%-50% off and still have about 3-4 months of prime grilling time left depending on where you live.

If, however, the BBQ bug has bit you and you just feel like there is no way that you can wait until July to buy some new grilling items, we encourage you to check out an online auction site for new or nearly new items at awesome prices. You see, just as you feel the need to buy something new to curb your BBQ habit, others feel the same way too. They are trying to clear out the old and bring in the new, which might make it your lucky day.

Vacuum Cleaner Attachments – The Importance of those Vacuum Extras

Vacuum cleaner attachments can be an important factor in deciding which make or model of vacuum cleaner is right for your home. Whether you wish to use your cleaner to vacuum your upholstery as well as your floors, have a number of pets, or simply wish to ensure that you can vacuum the debris from all the nooks and crannies in your home, it is the vacuum cleaner attachments that you need to look out for. So before you select the right vacuum cleaner for your household, be sure to carefully inspect the range of vacuum cleaner attachments that are included.

Whether you choose a canister or an upright vacuum for your household, there are usually a selection of vacuum cleaner attachments that come as standard with the particular model you choose. The vacuum cleaner attachments you will need to ensure the best vacuum possible for your home depends on the capabilities of the cleaner itself, and the particular vacuum requirements of your environment.

Vacuum cleaner attachments, for example, include special brushes that are used for removing pet hair from your home surfaces, and while this attachement will be important if your furry friends are prone to shedding dander, your vacuum cleaner might already include pet hair removal technology in the main body of the machine. Your choice between vacuum cleaner attachments and a vacuum system made specifically with pet hair removal in mind will depend on the extent to which your pet is prone to shed.

The vacuum cleaner attachments that you will need will thus depend largely on your own unique home situation, but a few vacuum cleaner attachments are always a good choice, regardless of your household’s needs. A long and slender attachment is ideal for cleaning those hard to reach spots, such as between and under furniture. Vacuum cleaner attachments for taking care of blinds are especially useful if you have these in your home.

Many of the vacuum cleaner attachments you will need will not come as standard with your cleaner, but never fear – it is possible to purchase universal vacuum cleaner attachements that will work with most cleaners. These attachements include a wide range of specialist cleaning tools that can expand the functionality of your vacuum. Before you purchase, though, always make sure that these universal vacuum cleaner attachements will work with the cleaner you have at home.

Hurricanes, Appliances and Back Up Power

Have you planned ahead for the tropical hurricane season in 2006? Long-term weather forecasters and the NOAA have predicted 2006 Atlantic tropical hurricane season will be one of the largest on records and perhaps could rival the 2005 Atlantic tropical hurricane season and if this is the case you need to prepare your family for such a potentially eventuality and perhaps even an extended tropical hurricane season.

Even if you have enough food and decide to refuse the mandatory evacuation that is required by law in your region, you still have to worry about the power and water supplies being out for weeks on end. This means you'll need a way to make sure that your appliances have the power they need to run and operate.

You will of course need the minimize such usage, for instance turning on a portable generator every so often to keep the refrigerator cool and the food in the freezer frozen. You may also need a way to cook food and you'll need extra gasoline or diesel fuel for fuel your generator depending on which type of fuel the uses.

You must also check the rating on your generator and the amount that your appliances take because if your generator only puts out a certain number of watts or amps it may not be able to run your refrigerator. And this means even if you have a generator you still will not be able to use it to keep your food cool.

Please consider a back-up power systems such as a portable generator in advance of any hurricane storm. Once hurricane season gets well on its way many times the portable generators that are being built are backlogged and that means you will not be able to purchase one. Plan ahead and protect your family and consider this in 2006.

Radiator Cover

A radiator is a heat-exchanging device that either absorbs or radiates heat. A typical radiator has a copper or aluminum tube bent several times to form a rectangle. These multiple loops help increase the internal surface area of the radiator and help in the cooling and heating process.

Radiators are common in homes, especially those located in cold regions. Unlike automotive radiators, where the device functions as a cooling element, building radiators primarily serve the function of heating the apartments. The radiator is warmed by hot water being pumped into it from a water heater. The hot water, when passing through the main radiator, gives out hear through the aluminum body and then sinks back to the bottom of the device. Although radiators are effective heating devices, their appearance tends to hamper the aesthetic beauty of the room. Most radiators are bulky in size and their aluminum body clashes with the rest of the room décor. Radiator covers are the perfect cure for this problem.

Radiator covers, as the name suggests, are enclosures for the radiators. These may be made of wood, aluminum, brass or fiberboard. These covers not only shield the unsightly radiator but also enhance the heating effect of the device. A normal radiator’s heat goes off into all directions of the room. One the other hand, a radiator cover, with its straight fins, directs the warm air in a particular direction, hence maintaining a consistent temperature in the room.

Radiator covers serve several other purposes as well. They function as protective devices, shielding people from the extreme heat that can be generated. Radiators can pose severe burn hazards if left unattended. Some of the modern radiator covers can also double up as storage devices.

Some experts claim that radiator covers tend to hold back heat and as a result use up more energy. However, if the radiator is properly designed and well maintained, this problem can be overcome. Overall, radiator covers are sure to enhance the process of heating and add to the aesthetic beauty of a room.

Glue Board Fly Killers

What is a glue board? A glue board (aka sticky board or gluepad) is a piece of stiff card with very heavy adhesive on one side. It is inserted into a fly killer machine.

What is a fly killer machine? It is a device that attracts flying insects by shining ultra violet light and then traps them.

What is ultra violet (uv) light? It is light just like any other light. It just happens to be invisible to humans but not to flies, who are extremely partial to it and tend to eagerly fly towards it. Anyway, a fly killer machine attracts flies using its uv light. Some fly killer machines have electric grids that electrocute the fly while others have glue boards on which the fly is trapped. This brings us back where we started.

Once the fly is trapped, it is no longer a threat. Fly killer machines that use glue boards are often used in situations where silent operation is required. Fly killers that electrocute (or zap) the fly give out an unmistakable noise that lets everyone know that the machine has made a kill. Some restaurants would prefer a more subtle operation where the fly discreetly flies into the fly killer machine and never comes out - and no sound is ever heard. Glue board fly killer machines are often made to mimic wall lights. Diners in a restaurant will not give these lamps a second glance, but they are not lamps in the normal sense. They are difference between having a fly spreading germs and giving the restaurant a bad name and a restaurant that pays regard to hygiene and has a good reputation.

If you live near a field or know somebody that does, then you may be aware that they will get more than their fair share of flies (and wasps). Similarly, if you keep livestock, have stables or even a dog, you will have more than the average amount of visits from curious flying insects. The same goes if you live near a food production plant or a refuse dump. For those who are in these areas, they too may prefer one of these discreet fly killer "lamps" instead of the industrial-looking zappers. Life is more comfortable in a fly-free environment. There is nothing worse than trying to entertain friends with a rolled up newspaper in one hand, at the ready. To be on constant guard when you should be relaxing is not ideal. Worse still is the fact that your unwelcome visitors - the flying ones, not your friends - will also spread disease. They will typically visit animal droppings, or a trash can, and then fly around your kitchen, spreading germs that they have picked up on their feet or regurgitating their own saliva on solids that they need to soften in order to digest. Not nice - and completely avoidable if a fly killer machine is used.

Fly killers fitted with glueboards will use less electricity than zapper fly killers. In an age when electricity prices are rising this is an increasingly significant consideration. There are also those who like to count their dead flies. Why, you may ask? Counting how many flies are killed will give an indication of the fly killer machine's effectiveness and an idea of flying insect activity. This is particularly useful to entomologists and other scientists and researchers, especially those concerned with the environment. Pest controllers will also use this method to determine the best place to site a fly killer. By moving the machine from one location to another they can count the amount of flies caught and determine the best place to site the machine. Manufacturers of fly killer machines, such as Insect-o-cutor. also use this method to test fly killer machine designs.

The method of trapping flying insects using glue has been with us for a very long time and way before electricity came along and gave us zappers. Hanging sticky papers is a practice that still happens today. It is much less common as most people would rather not see lots of dead flies hanging in their kitchen. Not only did electricity give us zappers but it also gave us ultra violet lamps. These will attract the flies to the glue, whereas sticky papers tended to only work if there were enough of them or if the fly's seemingly random flight pattern happened to take it to the paper.

Vacuum Cleaner Comparisons – Contrast Before Comparison

Making vacuum cleaner comparisons is an important part of choosing the right vacuum cleaner for your home. There are two sorts of examinations you can make of the cleaners available today, vacuum cleaner comparisons and vacuum cleaner contrasts. To ensure you find the best cleaning system for your home, you should both contrast and compare vacuum cleaners before making your final choice.

A comparison of vacuum cleaners should be left until you have determined which overall type of cleaner is right for your home. This is where the vacuum cleaner contrast comes in. Look at the larger picture before you look at the more detailed one involved in making vacuum cleaner comparisons, to ensure that you compare vacuum cleaners of a similar type. This allows you to make sure you really are getting the best of the bunch.

Examine your home setting before making more detailed vacuum cleaner comparisons. Do you have mostly carpeted floors in your home? What are you mobility requirements – would you be able to carry a bigger, possibly more powerful vacuum up the stairs, or would a more lightweight cleaner be suitable? Contrast the different types of vacuum cleaner available today to help you narrow down your choices. This will help you make more useful vacuum cleaner comparisons.

A comparison of vacuum cleaners is most effective when you select a few cleaners that appeal to you and then look more closely at the features they offer. Once you have chosen between a canister and upright vacuum, for example, you can compare vacuum cleaners more effectively. If the main feature you are looking for in a vacuum is a lighter weight, then compare vacuum cleaners of this type.

Performing vacuum cleaner comparisons between a smaller selection of cleaners is a more effective way to find the right vacuum for you. Remember to contrast the main features available in cleaners today, and once you have selected the most important vacuum traits for you, you will be able to make vacuum cleaner comparisons more accurately.

Outdoor Gas Grills

Before you head off to the nearest hardware store to buy a new outdoor gas grill, be sure to shop around first for the best price and the highest quality.

If you are fond of grilling hamburgers and steaks, then outdoor grills are perfect for you. You can find many gas grills in local stores, although some models may be harder to find. Try shopping at specialty grill markets for the best grills. Here are some things to look out for:

Price. Outdoor grills can sell for as much as $3,000 to as little as $100. Be practical – your grill stays outdoors, so there is no sense spending too much money for it. You may be better off spending your money on other more important kitchen appliances instead. A decent outdoor grill will probably cost about $300 to $500. A practical grill may not amaze your neighbors, but it surely does the same thing as the mega dollar ones.

Add-on features. Many outdoor gas grills have special features like side burners and rotisseries that may come in handy for more serious grillers. But before buying them, ask yourself if you really need the extra features. These models come with higher price tags, but if you often cook and entertain outdoors, then they may make for a good investment. If you just intend to use your outdoor grill to cook burgers and steaks, on the other hand, just keep it simple.

Material. Outdoor gas grills are typically made from aluminum, but the more expensive ones are made from stainless steel. If you can afford to spend a little more, then go for the stainless steel version – they are more stylish and provide greater versatility. Expect a stainless steel outdoor grill to last a good five to seven years.

Other options. Grill smokers are also available as another option in case you want to use grilling along with smoking as a method for cooking. The smoke comes through a smoker attachment added to the usual parts of the grill.

Fire Hazard Alert – is Your Dryer Ready to Ignite

In recent years there has been many stories about dryers catching on fire*. Should we be concerned? Yes of course. We should take seriously anything that may put our family at risk.

Was the problem the dryer? Rarely.

After investigating it is usually determined to have been the venting within the home catching on fire, and not the dryer.

The drying process……

When clothes are being dried inside your family dryer there are two processes happening. Firstly, heat is applied to the air inside the dryer drum as it turns. This raises its internal temperature to approximately 165 degrees Fahrenheit and causing moisture to be driven out of the clothes by evaporation. Secondly, a constant flow of air is passed through the clothes. Surprisingly, the real trick to efficiently dry clothes is not the heat, but rather this vast volume of air.

Most people think the purpose of venting is to push the heat and lint outside. Actually, its primary purpose is to dump the moisture outside the home. This job is accomplished easily when the dryer is near an outside wall.

The venting pipe……

In many new houses the laundry room is located in the centre of the home, close to the family room or kitchen. If located upstairs it is often between the bedrooms, to allow easier access to laundry. Easier access, but the distance from the dryer to an outside wall is substantially longer. This leads to the crux of our problem. The venting is either too long, or has become restricted.

It is more difficult to push air down a long venting pipe than a short one. When the venting is too long the excess air can cause the venting to misbehave. This results in the moisture and lint collecting in the venting, rather than being dumped outside.

Taken to extremes lint can block the venting closed. When this happens it can cause the dryer to overheat. The normal drum temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit can quickly shoot up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. It may even get hot enough to allow lint in the venting to ignite.

For this reason manufacturers now suggest a maximum venting length of 15 feet. Excluding the first two elbows.

True venting length……

If you want to know the true equivalent length of dryer venting, calculate the following:

1. Measure all the straight lengths and add them together

2. Count the number of turns or elbows, and multiply this number by 4

3. Add up the totals of steps 1 and 2

Example 20 feet of venting with 4 turns would actually be:

20 feet + 4X4 feet = 36 feet

Don’t be surprised by the true equivalent length of your venting. In modern homes it can be substantially longer than the manufacturers suggested maximum.

Watch for these signs……

If the blockage becomes critical the dryer will stop doing its job properly. As a homeowner watch for the following signs that the venting may be starting to block.

1 Clothes coming out wet
2 Excess lint left on clothes at cycle end
3 Inside of dryer feels wet
4 Taking too long to dry a load
5 Clothes very hot at end of cycle
6 Electrical consumption greatly increased

Since you can't move the laundry room the best thing you can do is be aware that the problem exists. Consider taking down the venting and cleaning out the lint buildup during your annual spring-cleaning. Also, regularly walk outside and check the vent cap where it exits your house. Remove any lint buildup and make sure the flap moves freely.

Central Air Conditioning

Buildings and large infrastructures generally have central air conditioning. A central air conditioning unit uses a split system for its condenser and compressor. The evaporator is attached to an air handling mechanism or a forced air furnace. The whole system is housed in a packaged unit that is often located outdoors, such as a rooftop or an outhouse.

Cooled air is distributed to the different floors and rooms through air ducts. A tenant may raise or lower the temperature through controls located in each room. Some buildings do not have such temperature controls. Tenants will have to deal with the common temperature set for all floors.

There are advantages to using a centralized air conditioning system. With the unit located outdoors, tenants are not bothered with the ambient noise that comes with a running air conditioning unit.

A sophisticated filtering system also cleans the air circulated in the whole building. Through various return-air ducts, room air is continually pulled and filtered. Through this process, dust particles and even microscopic pollutants are weeded out from the circulating air.

A centralized air conditioning unit also allows building administrators and engineers to control the energy consumption and voltage requirements of tenants. With a centralized air conditioning unit, tenants need not plug in their own stand-alone air conditioning unit.

In cooling or controlling temperatures, it is important that you can determine and dictate the total temperature. This is because it is easier and more economical to cool rooms with consistent temperatures. With a centralized air conditioning unit, you can do such.

When choosing the right brand or model for a central air conditioning unit, consider its filtering ability. Circulating air must be kept clean and fresh. Otherwise, you will be spreading pollutants to all areas of your building.

To give your tenants utmost convenience, you may have to provide them with the means to control the temperature on their respective floors. You may have to work with an architect to equip each floor with built-in controls.

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an electric cooling and heating system used to compress and decompress gas to heat or cool a house. This mechanical device pumps heat from a cooler to a warmer location and can extract heat from air, water or the earth. Heat pumps functions like an air conditioner in the summer and an electric furnace in the winter, thus encompassing both a heating and cooling unit in one device. The COP, or coefficient of performance, which calculates the ratio of heat output to electric power consumption, measures the performance of a heat pump.

Heat pumps are the most resourceful form of electric heating in moderate climates, and cool a house by collecting the heat inside the house and effectively pumping it outside. There are three types of heat pumps that one can install: air-to-air, water source and ground source. Heat pumps can collect heat from air, water or ground and can utilize the same to heat or cool your home. When installing a heat pump at home, one should consider using an energy-efficient heat pump system, keeping in mind the climate of the region.

For instance, air source heat pumps are a good option for mild and moderate climate regions, and ground source or geothermal heat pumps are efficient in climates with similar heating and cooling loads. The most common types of heat pumps are the air-source and ground-source heat pumps. Although ground source heat pumps are more expensive to install, they are more efficient and less noisy.

However, to make heat pumps work efficiently, they should be installed properly, and one should choose the right sized pump that can fulfill the heating and cooling demands of the house. While selecting a heat pump one should buy a device with a higher Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, or HSPF. The pumps should also be fitted with demand-defrost control, which minimizes the defrost cycles and reduces supplementary and heat pump energy use.

Wood Stove Insert Questions Answered

A wood stove insert is a high quality wood burning stove designed to insert into an existing fireplace and chimney. A wood stove insert is really a solid fuel room heater and requires careful positioning within a chimney. This should be done only by a certified installation professional. This type of stove is used simply for heating, and not as a cook stove for cooking food.

The primary reason for installing a wood stove insert rather than a stand alone stove is to utilize an existing fireplace, however there are additional benefits. A stove insert which is installed into an existing brick or stone fireplace will certainly be more efficient than a stand alone unit located within the room. This is due to the insulating qualities of the fireplace materials, assuming the fireplace is an original feature of the building. Remember increased heat efficiency means lower running costs for heating your home.

There are a number of requirements for installing a wood stove insert, most importantly the chimney. It is simply impossible without one. There are different types of chimney, for example sound masonry chimneys or Stainless Steel Class "A" insulated chimneys which tend to be used in new installations. Where a fireplace insert is being installed we can assume the property has an existing masonry chimney, but this does not automatically mean a safe and successful stove insert installation. There can be many problems installing into an old chimney, for example the chimney may need to be lined, it may be over sized or too small, or it may not be insulated. This highlights the need for careful preparation and planning before committing to a new wood stove insert, and the best advice would be to contact a professional and have your chimney checked fully before spending any money.

Lastly keep in mind even if you have a usable chimney you also need the correct floor protection beneath your wood stove insert. If the fireplace has been empty, redesigned or used for display purposes this may not be the case. There are a limited number of approved materials for this purpose, including concrete slabs, pre fabricated Approved Stove Boards, ceramic tiles or stone, but again consult a professional to be sure your fireplace itself meets the necessary standards

Air Compressors

Air compressors are mechanic devices that take in air and then compress and store it in a compressed form (meaning, it occupies less space than in its normal state). Air compressors are equipped with a tank that holds the compressed air inside. The tank is able to withstand all the pressure that the air applies inside it, but there are always signs that warn the user that damaging the tank can result in an accident.

One major difference between the various types of air compressors is that some of them are oil-lubricated while some others are not. Those that are not oil lubricated are also called oil-free compressors. Oil-free compressors boast the advantage that they don’t need oil in order to operate, while oil-lubricated compressors do. Additionally, oil-lubricated compressors need to have their oil changed after certain periods of operation.

Another difference that can be seen among air compressors is that some of them are stationary (meaning they are static or unmovable), while some others are designed from scratch to be portable. Common air compressors are not used for industrial purposes, and they occupy the same volume as a medium-sized table. This type of compressor usually comes with built-in wheels in order to be more portable. However, air compressors aimed at industrial use can occupy areas larger than one, two, or even more rooms. These compressors are not intended to be moved more than a few times during their lifetime. Moving these compressors requires money as well as good planning.

Air compressors can be found in homes, small businesses, service stations, or in large industries. Their usage ranges from dust cleaning to heavy industry usage (inside machinery) and gas turbines. Air compressors play an essential role in the correct operation of many devices and procedures.

Vacuum Cleaner Bags - Do They Keep Dirt Under Wraps?

There is a debate raging in the world of vacuum cleaners today; to bag or to go bag less. A bagged vacuum cleaner requires that you replace the bag when full. This is sometimes difficult to tell, and some consumers don’t replace the bag often. Then there are some vacuum cleaner owners that feel that changing the vacuum cleaner bag out is such a chore and let the bag fill with dirt causing the vacuums suction ability to diminish. The supporters of the bag less vacuum believe that the dirt cup is an innovative way to keep your vacuum working efficiently. You can visually see when the dirt cup needs emptying and if emptied regularly the vacuum remains efficient. The visual effect of a full dirt cup is enough to drive even the least interested user to empty the bag.

In reality when you take personal opinions aside, vacuum cleaner bags are not expensive and are easily replaced. Regular replacing of the bags keeps your vacuum working efficiently. Some vacuum cleaner models have an alerting light that lets the user know when you need a replacement vacuum cleaner bag. The full vacuum cleaner bag is easily slipped off and a new bag put in its place. With bag less vacuum cleaners you don’t have to worry about checking the bag since you can see the dirt in full view. Some vacuums have a dirt cup with a fill line that, once the dirt reaches this line, it’s time to empty the cup. There are bag less vacuums that have filters that require maintenance. The filters need to be cleaned or the suction of the vacuum is diminished. Emptying the dirt cup can be a challenge, creating a huge dusty mess. If emptying vacuum cleaner bags seems too much of a chore consider installing a central vacuuming system.

Central vacuuming systems are vacuum systems built into homes. The home owner does not have to pull the vacuum cleaner all through the house but instead docks the lightweight hose at the vacuums outlets mounted in the wall. The vacuum system is quieter and efficiently removes dust and debris cleanly. A central vacuum system also adds value to your home when you decide to sell. Central vacuum systems are not only installed in new home construction but can also be used in older homes. You definitely do not need a replacement vacuum bag for this system.

If you decide to purchase a vacuum cleaner that needs bags there are many different retailers of vacuum bags. You can purchase vacuum bags from almost any grocery, drug or hardware store. You can also shop online from online stores that sell only vacuum bags. You will find from Kirby vacuum bags to Miele vacuum bags in different quantities. Some manufacturer of vacuum bags manufacturer generic bags that can fit a number of different brands of vacuum cleaners. If you have a Eureka vacuum machine you will not need a specific more expensive Eureka vacuum bag but instead an affordable generic bag.

Wood Pellet Stove Heating - A Practical Alternative?

A wood pellet stove is now a viable alternative to modern methods of heating your home, and is itself a surprisingly recent innovation. During the 1980's this form of heating became quite popular, and has recently enjoyed a resurgence in interest. But what are the advantages of a wood pellet stove, and why should you consider one for your home?

Firstly what exactly is a wood pellet stove? Generally free standing but also available in fireplace insert form, a pellet burning stove simply uses special hardwood pellets and is designed to offer the same convenience and cleanliness expected of modern appliances, including safe and clean operation, thermostatic controls, and most importantly it is self feeding so constant attention is not required as with traditional wood burning stoves. Simply fill with pellets switch on and set your thermostat and the stove will burn for hours or days at a constant regulated temperature with no intervention from you.

An important distinction between wood pellet stoves and traditional wood burning stoves is that due to the construction and burn properties of the wood pellets they are consumed at a steady and predictable rate with virtually no creosote buildup. In addition they are incredibly safe, posing much less risk to the surrounding environment such as walls and furniture than traditional stoves.

Wood pellet materials and construction are integral to the safety and predictability that exemplify modern wood pellet stoves. Wood pellets are constructed from timber and other timber by-products often unused for other purposes, making them inherently environmentally friendly. They burn with almost no smoke and critically do not contribute to greenhouse effects and consequently global warming. Just as importantly no wood chopping is required making the process of heating a home much easier and certainly more pleasant.

Another huge advantage is that the wood pellet stove outlet at the back or top of the unit does not become hot anywhere near to the same degree as a traditional wood stove, which means a masonry chimney is not necessarily required in your home. If you have one then it can of course be used, but if not the stove can be installed wherever a metal liner or flue can be positioned through a wall or out of the roof. This is often impossible using a wood burning stove.

It must be noted however that a wood pellet stove is not as useful for remote locations where a traditional stove may be the better choice. In remote homes with no electricity for example a stove which burns chopped wood may be the only available option as most pellet stoves require electricity to run, in particular to power the electronic thermostatic controls. Remember this is a modern appliance designed for modern convenient living, but with the advantage of being particularly clean and environmentally friendly, it is not designed for rugged outdoor living

7 Reasons Why You Will Need an Internet Thermostat

There’s a lot of talk around the net of a new generation of home appliances; refrigerators that write your grocery lists and order your food for you, ovens that can be controlled remotely, and most interestingly – thermostats for your home that can be controlled through the internet or a phone line. Why would you want to control your home thermostat from afar? Here are 7 reasons why:

  1. The outside temperature’s pushing -5°F and you’re looking at a late night at the office – using an internet thermostat and a few keystrokes you won’t be heating an empty house.

  2. You’ve left for vacation and forgotten to turn off the thermostat – a quick phone call or connection to the internet and you’re saved!

  3. You’ve decided to extend your vacation for an extra week and your thermostat is set to return to normal operation right before you get home.

  4. You own a retail store or warehouse and you want to keep your staff or mischievous customers from changing the temperature.

  5. You leave your pets at home during the day. With an internet thermostat you can monitor and adjust the temperature to keep them cozy.

  6. Imagine setting your PC at work to automatically turn off your thermostat when you log in – and then turn it back on at the end of the day when you log off so no matter how long you work, your home will accommodate your schedule. How convenient would that be

The Importance of Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

The summer has finally hit and now you are spending more time indoors with the air conditioner on. You have the thermostat set on 75 degrees and are feeling pretty good until you realize that its getting hotter inside. Before you know it, it is 90 degrees in your house and you are calling the air conditioning repair company. Problem is that it is the busy season and they may not be able to get to you for a week. What a disaster. The sad thing is that this could have probably all been prevented with a little maintenance.

To have a smooth running HVAC system, you need to have a program of regular maintenance. Before every cooling season, have an air conditioning service come check your system. It is usually a minimum charge and can save you hundreds of dollars by catching problems early. It will also prevent the aggravation of having no air conditioning.

In a normal A/C service check, the company will perform the following tests. They will check the condensing unit's coils, the compressor, the belts, operating pressures, operating temperatures and the Freon level. They will typically oil any components that need oil such as the fan and condenser. The cost of the service is usually fairly cheap and most companies will also run specials in the spring. Keep an eye out for a sale flyer.

There are also things that you yourself can do to help maintain your homes HVAC system. The most important thing of course is to change your air filter often. They only cost a buck or two and protect not only your air quality but also keep dirt from clogging your AC coils. Replace them at least once a month. Another simple thing you can do is to hose off your outside AC compressor. At least once a month, take a hose and rinse off the unit to clear it of dirt, dust, grass clippings and leaves. If the unit becomes clogged, it will have to work much harder to get your home cool. Lastly, do not turn your unit off completely in the summer. Instead, turn the temperature up when you leave your home. Turning it off will just mean that your AC will have to work incredibly hard when you get home to cool off your house

Is Your Laundry Room Costing You Money?

The price of energy is going up all the time, and you're probably looking for ways to save on your house bills. As it turns out, your least favorite room may be one of your biggest energy hogs. I'm talking about the laundry room.

Now, you can save all sorts of money if you're willing to stop washing your clothes, but I'm guessing you're not looking to go that route (and all the folks you work with appreciate that). Let's take a look at some more practical ways you can save money in the laundry room.

1. Avoid washers and dryers with lots of fancy features.

If you're shopping for a new washer and dryer, stick to the basics. More expensive machines may have extra cycles, electronic control panels, and other fancy features, but they don't wash clothes any better than basic units. Those perks usually just add to the operating cost of the machine. (Not to mention, more doohickeys means more doohickeys that can break, requiring the hiring of a repairman...)

2. Use cold water.

A hot water load uses four times as much energy as a cold water load. You may want to do your whites in hot, but towels and linens are fine in cold. Actually, the majority of your clothes are fine done in cold water, unless they're very dirty (just make sure to use liquid detergent, as some powders only dissolve in very hot water).

3. Don't use "warm-rinse" cycles.

Many of the washers on the market today feature warm-rinse cycles. According to experts (yes, there really are laundry experts), you never need warm water to rinse your clothes, and you can waste $50+ a year on this feature.

4. Nice day? Dry your clothes outside.

Hanging a clothesline between two trees won't cost you anything beyond the initial investment of a package of clothespins from the dollar store.

5. Clean the lint trap.

Assuming suggestion #4 didn't fly for you, and you're sticking to your dryer, at least make sure you clean out the lint trap after every load. The dryer actually has to work harder, thus using more energy, when the trap is full.

6. Don't use the maximum dryer setting.

Unless you're doing a load of towels or other hard-to-dry items, don't use the dryer's maximum setting. A middle setting (between minimum and maximum) works fine for most clothes. In addition, it saves you pennies a load, which adds up to hundreds of dollars over the life of your dryer.

Range Of Evaporative Cooler Prices

Evaporative coolers are a better option when compared to the costly air conditioners. Since the evaporative coolers are cheap in their prices, possess high-tech systems and are quite reliable, so people prefer to use them. Portable and small in size, the air coolers keep your home and office truly cool spreading fresh and healthy air throughout the space. Evaporative cooler prices vary from cooler to cooler because each of the coolers has its own set of features and benefits. These outstanding features that differentiate them from one another include the speed fans, washable filters, and anti-bacterial water tank.

The evaporative coolers range in prices due to their different features that are sometimes common in each of the air coolers. If the air coolers have features like fans, remote control operating system, heater systems, and follow humidifier methods, then the prices of those evaporative coolers range from $64.89 to $114.99. These air coolers usually work with 60 to 200 watts of power and reduce the air temperature in the surrounding space to a considerable extent.

Different Types And Their Different Prices

The prices of the evaporative coolers also vary for the different types of the air coolers. The portable air coolers that can be moved from one place to another are quite durable and reliable. They cost lesser as compared to the air-conditioners that usually have exorbitant prices. The regular prices of these evaporative coolers are approximately $139.99 and the sale price of the coolers is $109.99. The evaporative air coolers that contain ionizers have their prices ranging from $129.99 to $149.99. The sale prices of these air coolers, however, range from being $89 to $99. These air coolers are truly advantageous, as the prices remain low yet they offer the highest cooling ambience to the entire space around.

Portable Steam Cleaners

Cleaning is definitely a good practice. Of course, who would not want to live in a neat and clean house? But what if you have to travel to a far away place and stay there for long time? Pretty much, the only option left is for you to make your temporary abode the next-best-thing-to-home. But then, the prospect of buying cleaning tools and household equipment is not really that enticing is it? Its really quite understandable considering the money that you have to spend on them, only to leave them behind because they are too heavy to transport.

But if you’re using a portable steam cleaner, it’s an entirely different story.

A different story indeed, for these steam cleaners is the newest trend in modern-day cleaning methods. They may resemble vacuum cleaners and may function like one, but they do much more than ordinary vacuum cleaners.

What makes them so special? Two things: their functionality (portable) and safe use (cleans with the use of steam to sanitize and disinfect).

Functionality. These steam cleaners are known for their compact and easy-to-use features, particularly the square-shaped and egg-shaped steam cleaners that you can just stash neatly underneath your bed, or in the back of your minivan once finished and you are all set to go. Others come equipped with wheels for easy maneuvering.

Safe Use. Perhaps this is the best feature of portable steam cleaners. You can clean your rugs, floors and carpets and remove harmful disinfectants and chemicals and say goodbye to dirt, dust, molds, germs and other types of bacteria that pose great danger to your health. Nor will you be inhaling harsh chemicals that are present if you use sanitizers and disinfectants.

The secret is the steam cleaner uses steam as the main cleaning agent. It cleans and disinfects solely by directing heat levels of 245°F to dust mites, molds and fungi, killing them in the process.

With portable steam cleaners, you are able to get great benefits you never thought available in one home cleaning tool e – safe and sanitary cleaning, useful features and functions in push-and-click buttons, steam control levels and removal of most types of bacteria and spores that can cause harm to you and your family. It also provides safe and effective cleaning, since it employs the most trusted method of sanitation by directing high levels of heat to contact surfaces.

Electric Heat Pumps

Electric heat pumps are the best solution for one’s home heating and cooling needs, as heat pumps save as much as 30% on heating costs when compared to a gas furnace and also provide year-round comfort. A good-quality electric heat pump provides a continuous flow of heat and an even temperature, whereas gas furnaces mostly blast certain areas with heat, causing uncomfortable hot spots. Additionally, an electric heat pump does not have an open flame and reduces the possibility of fuel leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning.

There are three types of electric heat pumps one can choose from: air source, dual-fuel and geothermal electric heat pumps. Air source electric heat pumps are the most common type of heat pump, and are further divided into packaged heat pumps and split-system heat pumps. Packaged heat pumps allow the compressor and heat exchangers to be located outside your home, using ductwork to heat and cool your entire home. Split-system heat pumps allow more flexibility for installation, as the indoor air-handling unit and heat exchanger are separate from the compressor and the outdoor exchanger. The heating efficiency of an air source heat pump is measured as the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF), and ranges from 6.6 to 9.1, whereas the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) indicates the cooling efficiency and generally falls between 10.0 and 15.0.

An Introduction To Connectors

Every house or office today is equipped with a multitude of connectors. Connectors are devices used for mating and de-mating electrical power connections.

Connectors are responsible for power transfers and information transfers among machines and people that are spread over different locations. This is usually a mechanical or optical coupling device that provides a demountable connection between two fibers or a fiber and a source or detector. This component connects conductors of one circuit with those of another circuit. It is used to provide rapid connection or disconnection mating with a personal computer board or another connector. A housing becomes a connector when it contains the specified number of contacts (with conductors) to make it functional.

A connector is different from a splice. A splice is a device that joins conducting or transmitting media permanently; it is used to join physical media that conduct or transmit power or a communication signal. Connectors join things temporarily, while splices are only done when wires are to be permanently joined.

Different electrical and electronic equipments have different set of wires and every wire has a different set of connectors. There are so many different types of connectors that it is often difficult to understand where it is to be fitted. Even worse, one may buy a replacement cable that simply has the wrong connectors. If the connectors don't fit, it is often possible to just replace the connector rather then returning the entire piece of equipment. Advice from a good hardware installation expert is recommended while troubleshooting any issues pertaining to connectors.

Kitchen Appliances

Everyone who does any cooking spends a lot of time in the kitchen, and there are appliances that you need in a kitchen to make life easier when you cook. The stove is probably one of the most important appliances in the kitchen. You should select a stove that has burners and ovens that are accessible. There are several brand name stove manufacturers like Jennair, GE and Frigidaire that designed their stoves so that the knobs or push-button controls are in the front of the stove, so you don’t have to reach across hot burners to reach controls. Another option that allows for more flexibility is having a cook top with a separate oven built into the wall.

The refrigerator you choose should be shallow in depth to allow for easy access to items that are stored in the back. You can also consider refrigerators with turntables, adjustable shelving and slide out storage boxes. Water and ice dispensers on the door of your refrigerator are also nice additions.

If you want a microwave, place it at countertop reach. Those that are above the stove or high up on a wall are too hard to reach and hot dishes are more likely to spill out over you or the floor. When placed on a counter, a side-swing door is the best option, as it allows for easy access to plates, etc. A garbage disposal is a must in any kitchen and is a great convenience eliminating the need for a separate receptacle for garbage. Another great convenience is a trash compactor built into one of your lower cabinets spaces. This allows you to eliminate a trashcan in the kitchen area.
