Home Appliances

Home appliances are all of those appliances that are used in the home. It is a very broad term that encompasses everything from electric toothbrushes to washer/dryers. Home appliances can be large or small. They are basically classified as white good and brown goods. Brown goods are classified as household electrical entertainment appliances like CD and DVD players, televisions and camcorders. The term “brown” was applied because most of these appliances at one time were traditionally finished with wood.

Major household electrical appliances are called white goods and include air conditioners, dishwashers, stoves, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, etc. White goods were, and still are in many cases, enameled white.

Any home appliance that is purchased today should be energy efficient in order to save money. Federal regulations have to be listed on any appliance purchased, so you can see what you are buying and how energy efficient it is. This is particularly true with furnaces, refrigerators, freezers, water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioners and lamps. Another example is purchasing an appliance that uses water, like a washing machine or a dishwasher. Look for newer features like reduced water uses for different rinsing cycles. Another cost effective measure you can take when buying an air-conditioner is to make sure that it fits the size of your room. If you purchase one that is too big for the area that needs to be cooled, you’ll be wasting energy and money. The Department of Energy suggests that an air-conditioner’s size can be determined by multiplying your room’s square feet by 20.

Window Air Conditioners

Window air conditioners are small units made to fit a standard window space. They work like any other air conditioner and they come in different BTU (British Thermal Units) capacities to cool rooms of different sizes.

Window air conditioners came to the market as a solution for people who couldn't afford or did not want central air conditioning. Because central air conditioning can be quite expensive, and because many people live in small apartments, central air is not for everyone. This led to the advent of window air conditioners.

Window air conditioners have a hot coil and a chilled coil along with two fans. The fans blow air over these coils and they in turn suck away the heat and humidity from the room into the outside area, providing clean, cool air.

The capacity of an air conditioner is measured in BTUs. So, the size of the air conditioner plays a vital role in determining its cooling capacity. When a small window unit for a large room is not enough, a large unit for a small place is waste of money. So, you should buy a window air conditioner appropriately based on your room space. For a space up to 350 square feet, you would require 8000 BTUs. The number of BTUs grows proportionately according to your space.

Window air conditioners have high-energy efficient ratios, noise-free, and when fitted properly cool an entire space very quickly. There are lots of types of window air conditioners from different companies available at different prices. Companies like Haier, Kelon, and Carrier have products starting from price ranges as low as $50-$150. They come with quiet operation function, timer, dehumidification, air filters and much more.

If you spend over $300 on an air conditioner, the quality and value increases dramatically. The air conditioners have a high EER and BTU capacity and are capable of cooling large spaces very quickly. Spend $600 or more and you'll be purchases a super deluxe model that will probably cool your entire first floor living area.
