Appliance Shopping Guide

There are certain shopping strategies that one would be wise to follow when looking to buy a new appliance. Firstly, measurements of the size of space intended for the machine must be made. Ensure too that the space in which the appliance door will open is large enough.

Second, and perhaps most important, is to ensure good a good broad knowledge of different brands and models. Identify those features that are necessary for your own personal buying. Are the machines noisy or do they vibrate? What safety features do they have? How much water do they consume? How energy efficient are they?

The cost of operation is another important feature not to be ignored. The more energy an appliance uses, the more expensive running it will be. If an appliance is going to last ten to twenty years, utility bills are an important consideration, thus an appliances energy rating can make a big difference.

There are also things you can do after purchasing an appliance to reduce your energy bills. If your refrigerator is close to the stove, dishwasher or heat vents, try to move it away. This will reduce the heat flow near the machine and thus reduce the energy needed to cool it. Try to vacuum the coils on the back of your refrigerator every three months to eliminate dirt buildup that reduces efficiency. Also, check the door gasket for air leaks. Finally, defrost the your freezer when more than a quarter-inch of ice builds up.

A pre-rinse of dishes is generally not necessary for many machines that automatically per-rinse or has a rinse/hold cycle. Use the ‘energy saver’ option found on many of the machines.

In terms of clothes washers, ensure that the water level used in the washing machine is compatible to the load of clothes. A small load does not require the whole tub filled. And finally, clean your dryers after each use or as necessary.

Small things like this can be greatly significant in terms of energy conservation. Remember to check the energy rating and to compare the features of each appliance available. Your own personal preferences may vary greatly from anothers, so careful consideration is important when deciding what to buy.

Discover The Advantages Of A Room Air Purifier

Have you ever just looked around your room, lets say your bedroom and actually observed the dust that has accumulated in places. There are many things that are just floating through the air and we are breathing these particles in every second of every day. A room air purifier can help eliminate unwanted particles in the air. If we could see through a microscope some of the things we are breathing in, we would be horrified. Believe it or not, there are things you are breathing in that look like prehistoric monsters. They are gross to look at and yet our bodies are breathing them in all the time. This article will talk about some of the advantages to using a room air purifier.

One of the many causes of allergies is dust and household dust. A room air purifier can rid the air of dust. Our homes are like a closed container and in today’s house market, they are actually considered air tight for economical reasons, but unfortunately, we are breathing the same air over and over. This is why more colds are caught in the home than any place else. Our beds contain dust mites and we are breathing in these little monsters all the time. Did you know that over a period of time, the actual weight of your mattress can double and triple because of the volume of dust mites. A room air purifier can help eliminate these little critters as well.

A room air purifier can not only rid the air of dust and dust mites, but it will also rid the air of pollen and smoke. Did you know that you don't have to smoke to carry the smoke smell on you. That's right. The smoke will attach itself to your hair and your clothes or the smokers, and they will bring the smell right with them wherever they go. They often have the smoke smell on their hands too, so if they touch something or you, you now have it. A room air purifier can help eliminate the smoke smell by drawing it into its filtering system. The contaminants then attach themselves to the filter or plate, and then the room air purifier releases good, clean, fresh air back into the room.

There are many different models of a room air purifier to choose from. They make units that are sized for certain square footage. Some will accommodate a room or there are units designed to air clean an entire home. You can get a room air purifier for your closet space, the bathroom, or your car and they even make a unit that you can wear around your neck like a necklace that will clean the air you are breathing anywhere. You can find a room air purifier in many home improvement stores.

Portable Air Compressors Are Handy

The most often used air compressors are portable rotary screw compressors. You can put the pressure settings from 100-350 PSI. You can find them ranging 65-1600 cubic feet per minute. What you need depends on the tools you will be using. A pro will usually use something with 185 CFM, which can get the job done while powering more than one tool at a time.

You can mount a truck compressor in the bed or underneath the hood of your truck. This is great to save some space and they use your truck’s engine for power, so they are easy to maintain. You must have your truck running to power the compressor, which can be a deterrent.

You can get a compressor that is mounted in your truck bed called a deck mounted compressor. Since these have their own engines then won’t need you to power your truck for them to work. They need engine maintenance and fuel as well since they aren’t powered by your truck.

Other compressors run off electricity, while others use gas. In both kinds the air is in the holding tank and the tools are attached by a hose. There are gauges on the compressor that will show the pressure, which is valve regulated.

You can look at a Quincy air compressor which are very good. They offer a rotary screw compressor, which has 10-350 horsepower. They make quality machines that will last for a while, they have larger models and smaller ones.

A Husky brand air compressor is great for use in your home. The tank has 135 PSI and holds 1.75 gallons. You can run all kinds of tools on it and are so easy to carry around with the telescope handle. You can get the oil free pump to maintain it well.

If you choose the Husky air compressor that holds 4 gallons you will be getting upt 125 PSI and is great for small jobs around the house.

Dirt, dust, and your carpet - An inside look at just what is living in your floors

Hiding in your carpet, mattress, pillows, curtains, upholstery are dust mites. How many? The average life span of a mite is about 2 months and they can double in numbers if the conditions are right, every twelve hours. If you consider the math, that is well over a hundred or so thousand corpses of mites per year in your home. Not only that, but each of those mites can produce up to 20 fecal matter deposits per day which equates to millions of deposits per year. To further put it in perspective, it’s estimated that one tenth of the weight of your mattress or pillow after three years of usage is comprised of fecal matter from the common household dust mite. Why your home? Mites eat dead skin cells and the average person sloughs off millions every few days.

These skin cells are abundant in your mattress and pillows, in the places that you live and therefore make it a good environment for them to exist in. Mites thrive in the humidity that most households are kept at and like the air slightly moist and humid. So our homes are perfect conditions for them to live in. In addition to mites, pet dander is another invader. Pet dander is impossible to avoid even if you yourself do not own a pet. Pet dander is comprised of dead skin cells that are sloughed off of dogs mixed with saliva, urine traces, and allergens from the environment such as pollen and spores of various sorts. This all gets together in a sticky mess and we call it pet dander. Dander gets tracked in off your shoes, into your carpet and also from just being around other human beings that may have pets at home. There are about 70% of American households that own pets so a person at work that brushes up against you by accident, or your children from other children at school, or someone hugging you potentially may have dander on them from a cat or dog and will get it on your clothes, and you may track it into your home. These two are perhaps of the most potent allergens to most people. They really affect health and actually can lead to asthma triggers if not taken care of. Finally dirt is one of the most deadly things for your carpet to endure. When you walk on your carpet, whatever is on your feet is ground into the fibers of the carpet. IF there is dirt and soiling agents on your feet or shoes, these get ground into the fibers too. Once they are in there, it will cause them to unwind and fray. Straggling hairs will then combine in a mat like fashion and create uneven little clumps in the carpeting thus minimizing the longevity of your carpets and rugs.

What do you do about all these invaders and these microscopic vigilantes that are wreaking havoc on your home and family? Prevention is key. There was a study conducted at the Florida Solar Energy Center by Subrato Chandra and David Beal that studied five homes across the US but focusing on Florida. They found that prevention and good cleaning habits are vital in controlling these allergens. Using control groups and scientific collection principles, they found that homes that had poor vacuuming tools (those older models that did not have HEPA filters but rather just used bag filtration) or schedules that allotted for only one cleaning per week were much more prone to have mites and dander and levels of which were significantly more higher in comparison to those who vacuumed twice per week with a vacuum that had a HEPA filter such as the Dyson vacuums or a centralized unit that was housed outside of the home. The vacuuming was performed on the floors, furniture and mattresses.
In addition they found that if a dehumidifier was used in each bedroom, that the levels were also much lower. If you own an older home, it’s recommended that you have a Vacuum with greater suction ability. Dyson Vacuums tend to work best for collecting mites, dander, and dirt because over time, these get compacted into the deep layers of the nap in the carpet and only something with significant suction power can remove the lower nap dirt and allergens. It is also recommended that once or twice per year that your carpet is professionally cleaned and bed linens are washed in hot water each week.

Do not allow your home to be invaded any longer! Plan your attack on mites, dander, and dirt. It may be a small world out there, and we may not be able to segregate ourselves from it, but we do not have to go quietly into the night.

Basic Cookware Explained

What is All-Clad stainless steel cookware and why is it the best top-of-the-line bake ware you can buy? All-Clad cookware is made with a heavy aluminum inside which extends up the sides of the pan. It is coated with a stainless steel cooking surface and has an outside layer of magnetic stainless steel. This type of bake ware is ideal for cooking on a gas stove where the flames can burn up the sides of the pots and pans. These types of pots and pans are heavier than the less expensive kinds that you find at cheap discount stores. This cookware is extremely popular among the expert chefs, holds up well in high heat up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit and it comes in a nonstick version as well.

Maybe you like to do lots of browning. If so you may want to use uncoated or non coated cookware for your favorite recipes. A top brand of uncoated pots and pans are made by Wolfgang Puck. Chances are you will never see a review that will not give Wolfgang Puck high marks for its baking performance and price value. Uncoated bakeware has an aluminum plate as the foundation or base. It does not run up the side as does the All-Clad type which is a big reason why uncoated is less expensive.

Calphalon nonstick bakeware is a hard anodized aluminum bake ware with a nonstick coating. If you are looking for a cheaper brand that will perform almost as well as the more expensive ones this may be what you are searching for. Plus it is also lighter in weight than most All-Clad varieties or brands. It may require a little more energy on your part during cleanup though since most Calphalon nonstick pots and pans are not dishwasher safe. Another positive aspect to this type of cookware is that it can be used in your oven in temperatures up to about 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Similar to Calphalon, Emeril (Emerilware) is a high quality cookware that compares favorably to other top-of-the-line pots and pans and is a very good value for the money. Your favorite recipe will still taste delicious. Famous TV chef Emeril Lagasse has this line made by All-Clad which is similar to their hard anodized cookware. The major difference is the designs added to the pieces. This cookware is made of hard anodized aluminum with nonstick cooking surfaces. It is not recommended for the dishwasher, but comes with a lifetime warranty. That is something you do not see everyday.

The debate about nonstick or uncoated has endured for many years, but which is actually better? Experts have always said that uncoated cookware gives better results, but nonstick has its advantages too. Fried eggs and pancakes are a couple of obvious examples of foods that are more fun to cook or bake on a nonstick surface. No more sticking to the pan during cooking or cleanup. Scraping cooked eggs off the pan is not one of the most enjoyable cooking activities. High quality nonstick skillets will contain a fully coated aluminum plate bonded with stainless steel allowing for even heat distribution. You can also find top brands that are dishwasher safe, although most manufacturers will recommend hand washing.

Starting with high quality cookware is a must if you are looking for the most enjoyable cooking experience. And before you can purchase the most ideal bakeware for your needs you have to ask yourself a few questions. How much can I afford? Will it bother me if they are not dishwasher safe? Do I want nonstick or uncoated? Would I prefer better cookware or easier cleanup? After answering these questions you will have a much better idea as to the type of cookware best suited for your personality.

Double your turnover - without really trying

“Would you like fries with your order?” No doubt you’ve heard that question a million times. Especially if you have young children who ‘help’ you choose where to eat. That phrase may irritate the hell out of us – but it does dramatically increase the turnover of a certain chain of restaurants.

Why do you think they do it? Is it because they care about their customers and whether they have ordered enough to eat? I don’t think so. It’s doubtful if their motives are that altruistic.

No. It’s purely about increasing sales, and therefore profits.

It’s called ‘Add-on Selling’, and that particular company not only pioneered but mastered the technique of getting you to buy more than you intended. And if you can apply it to your business, you can watch your business skyrocket without the need for any advertising, special promotions, discounts or any other business-building tools you can dream up. Imagine how difficult it would be to increase your turnover by 25%. (If it wasn’t difficult, why haven’t you done it already?)

How does ‘Add-on Selling’ work? Easy. It’s a matter of disciplining yourself to think ahead one step beyond the purchase your customer is making right now.

Let’s say you have a sports store and a customer is buying a new pair of football boots for his son. Once the new boots have been chosen, it would be logical to suggest a new pair of shin guards or comfort insoles with the purchase. Or boot cleaning products, or spare studs and laces. Products they will have to buy eventually anyway – but probably somewhere else. Why not have them buy those items – now – from you. They are only about one quarter the price of the boots and are an easy addition for the customer since it is not a lot of extra money. But it has increased your turnover by 25%! As simple as that. And even if you only succeeded half the time, if you did that with every second customer, your sales for the day would be up by 12.5%. Every day!

How much would that mean to you at the end of the month, end of the quarter, end of the year? A substantial amount, I’d bet. And what did it cost you? Precisely nothing!

Every time a customer makes a buying transaction with your business you suggest an additional, complimentary product to go with it.

How about a butcher shop? When a customer buys a chicken, they will also need seasoning mix, or stuffing, or gravy mix. If you have those products on hand it’s an easy question to ask your customer what they are going to stuff the chicken with. Or what they are going to do about gravy. Hey, presto – you have the solution ready for them. It’s an easy buying decision for your customer because it won’t cost very much extra, and they have their wallet or purse out already. An extra 15-20% profit for you. Do that with every second customer and watch your profits explode!

Or your timber yard. Find out what your customer is going to do with the timber through the judicious use of open questions, and suggest that your customer will also need nails, screws, glue, hammer, saw and spirit level. Or whatever. And, of course, you have them there for your customer to take away with them saving time later on. Advantage to them, advantage to you. Win/Win.

Or a wedding shop – now there is a goldmine. Once the dress has been chosen, there’s the shoes, underwear, jewellery, make-up, cosmetics, wedding cars, speech writer, and of course all the men’s outfitting. Your imagination can run wild with that one, not to mention your turnover.

Get the picture? This is the easiest way to increase your business – starting today! There is no special equipment you have to buy, no elaborate training to attend, no particular stock to order and no extra staff to hire. You have it all there already. And it costs you absolutely nothing!

The next area of no-cost increased sales is equally simple to do. Package selling. What is package selling? Putting together groups of products that go to make up something larger than each of the individual products themselves.

Take the example we used before of the timber yard. You group together the joists, decking timbers, nails, screws, glue, measuring tape and spirit level and a set of easy-to-read instructions to build a garden patio in one afternoon. The ‘DIY Outdoor Centre’ will cost your customer less as a package than the individual components would if bought separately, but you have a bigger sale value as they are buying everything from you. And they are buying the convenience.

Or if you sell cars. Your ‘Sports Package’ could consist of sporty alloy wheels and special tyres, a sports steering wheel and go-faster stripes; your ‘Family Package’ could be a roof-top luggage holder, DVD player with games console and a car fridge; your ‘Executive Package’ could be tinted windows, cruise control and stackable CD player. And two dozen golf balls! The options for this industry are virtually endless, limited only by your imagination.

What about those people who sell kitchen appliances? Your ‘Breakfast Package’ could have a kettle, toaster, coffee maker, and omelette pan; the ‘Bakers Package’ could be a set of mixing bowls, cake tins, wooden spoons, icing kit and oven gloves; the ‘Steak Lovers Package’ would be a ridged pan to give the striped effect on the meat, tongs, steak knives and mustard selection.

You get the idea. Whatever you package together is a good deal for the customer, not only in terms of the cost of the package, but also the fact that they get everything they need in the one single purchase. They save money and you make sales of a much larger value to each customer. And your profits go up. Again, Win/Win.

Home appliances, Select them on Price or Energy Efficiency?

For many people, price is the most important consideration when buying appliances. What they forget, however, is that there are two prices for anything which consumes power, the buying price and the running price. Buying appliances with energy efficiency in mind may cost more up front but save you money in the long run.

Most modern appliances like refrigerators and washing machines carry a label indicating their energy efficiency. Products which use the least amount of power are qualified to use the “Energy Star” label. This is a government backed program aimed at providing consumers and businesses information about saving energy.

In order to be labelled ,energy efficient, a product must meet certain criteria. For example, refrigerators must use 15% less electricity than the minimum standard set by the federal government. Office equipment must automatically switch to a low-power sleep mode after a certain period of inactivity.

Almost every major appliance such as air conditioners, freezers, furnaces, and pool heaters qualify for the Energy Star label. Buying an Energy Star product will save you money on your utility bills and will be better for the environment. Using less electricity in the home means less fossil fuel consumed by power producing plants, and less greenhouse gas emissions.

Will an energy efficient product save you money? Absolutely! Each product has a label which says how much energy it consumes. You can use this information to figure out exactly how much power you will save over the life span of the appliance. Factor in rising energy costs and your savings are even more. The energy efficiency of any product is dependent on the engineering of the various parts that use power. For example, an air conditioner has a circulation pump, a fan, and a motor to turn the blades, as well as electronic components for controlling the temperature. Each one of these can be designed to save energy, so the overall energy efficiency is affected by the quality of these components.

Some local governments offer incentives for people to buy energy efficient products. Be sure to get informed – you may qualify for rebates or low interest loans to purchase these items.

How to Get Started with Your Own Home Solar Electric System

Step number one in getting started with any solar power setup in your home is to perform an energy audit. This is where you evaluate the amount of power (in kilowatts/hour or kilowatt hours) that you’ll need in any given day.

You will also need to take into account the site where your home is located. Geographical considerations such as climate, number of peak hours of sunlight per day, number of days of peak sunlight per year, and average rainfall will play a big role in how efficient a solar system you can design.

Any solar electric system will need, at the very least, the following components: a collector (usually solar panels); a mount (to put it on); an inverter (to convert 12 volt DC power to 110 volt AC power); a circuit breaker or fuse box and fuses & switches (to regulate the power transferring from the panels to your outlets and/or storage batteries); (optional) one or more storage batteries; (if you get a battery) a charge controller (to keep from over- or undercharging the battery and severely reducing its lifespan);

Once you’ve purchased all the elements of the solar system you’ve just designed, installation is fairly easy, though the simplicity of installing a solar power system does not mean you should necessarily do it yourself. There are numerous advantages to hiring a professional installer with training in both electrical systems and solar electrical systems, including knowing how to set everything up to code, should the building inspector ever have the need to look it over (ie. for insurance purposes).

If you find the right solar professional, they will instruct you in those parts of the installation that you are capable of and allow you to do some of the work yourself, saving you on some of your labor costs.

Even if you don’t decide to have a professional install your solar system, it would be well worth your while to consult one with your design to make sure it’s a viable design, one that’s taken all the necessary considerations into account. For example, there is a wide selection of panels, controllers, inverters, and batteries, each one manufactured with different requirements, each one not necessarily interchangeable with the other.

To further minimize the chances of incompatibilities between components in your solar system, consider purchasing all the elements of your set up from the same company and consulting with someone on their sales team that is knowledgeable in solar electric power.

In fact, many companies sell solar kits that contain all the components you would need to set your house up with solar power, with the certainty that all the components are compatible.

What Everyone Ought To Know About Cordless Vacuum Cleaners

As the name suggests, a cordless vacuum cleaner is one that does not require an electrical cord to run it. Instead of drawing power from the mains supply, it runs on power stored in a battery, which in most cases is of rechargeable type. The battery can be recharged from time to time so that the vacuum cleaner is always in ready-to-use state. How long the battery lasts once it is fully charged can vary anywhere from 10 minutes to a couple of hours depending upon the make and model of the vacuum cleaner.

The most attractive feature of cordless vacuum cleaners is their portability, which comes from their small size, low weight, and absence of messy electrical cords. This makes them particularly suitable for cleaning small, difficult-to-access areas as well as for cleaning outdoors (such as car cleaning). However, the bigger models are equally effective for larger areas too, e.g., stairway, all kinds of floors (vinyl, wood, tiles), carpets, etc. Imagine being able to lug around your vacuum cleaner practically anywhere, without the inconvenience of having to deal with long electrical cords.

Being lightweight and portable, they are also very convenient to store. Smaller handheld vacuum cleaners can be mounted on a wall or just kept next to your working area, be it your computer desk or your kitchen countertop. In fact, since most are fairly inexpensive, you can purchase several and leave them at important spots throughout the house. So, no matter which part of the house you are in at any given part of time, you will always have a vacuum cleaner handy within easy reach.

Cordless vacuum cleaners come in a variety of sizes, offering a variety of features, and so the price range varies widely. One popular handheld model available in the market is the Black & Decker CHV1400 14.4-Volt Cyclonic Dust Buster. This comes with a wall-mountable recharging base. Since in the fully charged state this vacuum cleaner runs for only 10 minutes, it is suited for use in, e.g., a woodshop, office or a vehicle, where you need cleaning in bouts. Another popular model is the Dirt Devil 083414 Extreme Power Stick Vacuum for cleaning carpets, as well as wood, vinyl and tile flooring.

Cordless vacuum cleaners can come either as bagless or with dust-collecting bags that must be emptied. The bagless varieties have a small compartment that collects the dirt and must be emptied often. The ones with bags offer better suction power compared to bagless ones.

A major limitation of cordless cleaners is the longevity of the batteries. Batteries typically do not last as long as one would want them to. Manufactures are constantly searching for ways to improve the life of batteries in cordless vacuums, without adding to its weight.

Most of the departmental stores, home improvement stores and electrical appliance stores house cordless vacuum cleaners. They can also be purchased online from one of the many retailers selling these items on the Internet at highly competitive prices. No matter what kind of a cordless cleaner you are looking for, and no matter where you would like to buy one from, you are sure to find one of that fulfills your needs. So, happy cleaning!

Echo Water Treatment Systems

Echo systems are a managed water treatment system, run by the state and federal bodies that protect people all over the country. Home echo water treatment systems include the use and the monitoring of the water treatment plants that provide your home water. Facilities are regulated and reported by city and by zip code to those agencies that are watching the echo systems. The compliance of providing clean water is regulated and governed by the use of the Clear Air Act and the Clean Water Act as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which are also known as the CAA, the CWA and the RCRA.

Home echo systems are required for those, such as a diary farm, for those who have a large subdivision or perhaps for an apartment complex. Echo systems treat the sewage and waste, as a holding tank or public sewage treatment center would, but on another scale. The reporting done by the echo system contains information if the sewage and black water is being treated properly, or if there are any problems in the system overall.

Compliance and regulations for echo systems are available from water regulatory offices, and often from agricultural offices as well. If you are worried that a dairy farm near you, or that a large housing complex near your home is not treating waste water and sewage in a manner that is protecting the community the local governing agencies will be able to help you with this topic more. Any large sewage system or echo system that is connected to a water works facility will be regulated for compliance and for ongoing treatment of that waste.

How To Use A Sink Auger

Having a clogged sink is a common problem for homeowners. Using a sink auger is a simple way to unclog a sink. A sink auger is commonly called a plumber's snake, drum auger or canister auger.

STEP ONE:
Remove the sink stopper and insert the auger cable into the drain until you have hit the clog. (You will have to loosen the screw on the side of the auger body for the cable to be extended.)

STEP TWO:
Leave ample room for you to be able to work with the auger(about a foot), and re-tighten the screw.

STEP THREE:
Start turning the crank on the auger until you can feel the clog, and then un-tighten the screw and insert a little more of the auger cable. Re-tighten the screw and keep repeating this step until the clog is freed.

STEP FOUR:
Flush out the pipe with hot water. Rinse of the auger cable thoroughly before retracting it.

If your drain is working properly, your job is complete. If the drain is still clogged, it could mean that the clog is past the water trap. The water trap is the part of your sink drain that sinks down like a U. If the clog is past the water trap, you still have a bit more work to do.

STEP FIVE:
Make sure the water is turned off. Unhook the water trap from the adjoining pipes(it is wise to have some sort of container or bucket underneath the water trap to catch any water that may still be in it.)

STEP SIX:
Insert auger cable into the flat area of the pipe, then go back to step two and follow the steps again, until the pipe is unclogged.

If this procedure does not work, it's time to call the plumber.

Information to Know Before Changing Your Locks

Changing your locks may sound like a simple task, but this is true only if you know what you are doing. There are many different styles of handles on the market. The locking mechanisms on certain styles vary and each has a unique function. If you are going to change your locks, be sure to know what type works best and why. Here is some useful information on styles and basics of changing a lock. Knowing what the lock is used for is important in finding the style that best meets your security needs.

Free through Passage Handles: These handles are exactly as they sound. You will not have to worry about locks. They come in either a knob type handle style or a level style which is very popular. Before purchasing these handles, though, be sure you do not need a lock.

Privacy Door Knobs: These handles are often used in the bedroom or bathroom. You can unlock the door by either turning the knob or turning an extra switch on the inside of the door. These are great for those areas where privacy is desired most.

Security Deadbolt Lock: The single deadbolt lock is a great style lock is good for any entrance to the home, whether the front or back door. However, it is best to use this lock with doors that do not have side lights or a glass pane since entrance would be fairly easy. One would only have to break the glass and reach in to turn the knob. The double deadbolt lock can provide extra strength and security to your doors. It can be locked form the inside or the outside using a key. You can also add a chain, for example, to provide even more security.

Decorative Door Knobs, Deadbolt and Latch Set: These handles help improve your home’s appearance. They are often placed on French doors. You can also use them on pantries if there is nothing hazardous inside, which should be kept from small children for instance. There are no locks on these decorative handles, but a little more security can be implemented with a decorative deadbolt and latch set. You can use these two pieces together or by themselves, depending on your needs.

You must now determine if the door handle you currently have is appropriate. To make this determination, you should first look at the latch plate. The hole may not be deep enough for a higher quality latch. Open and remove the existing latch plate, which is on the inside of your door. If it does not fit into the old hole, you will need to chisel the hole to give it a deeper depth. Also, be sure to check that the plunger for the deadbolt lines up with the hole in the frame since the lock will not provide proper security otherwise. Adding longer screws into the pre-drilled areas on the latch plate can add extra security.

How To Hire An Appliance Repairman

Hiring an appliance repair service professional can be a hard thing to do. There are a few factors that make the appliance repair industry hard for homeowners to navigate.

First, there is the debate about fixing an old appliance or simply buying a new one. Often times when a major appliance breaks our first response is to buy a new one. However, it is often much easier and less expensive then one thinks to fix an existing appliance. Therefore, doing the repair can save significant money.

Second, if you are like most homeowners you don’t know the first thing about your appliances. This means you are really at the mercy of your professional when it comes to what parts need to be replaced and what they say needs to be done (as well as how much it will cost!)

Finally, there is the challenge of locating the right appliance professional for the right job. Sometimes different repairmen repair different brands.

So what do you do?

We recommend:

• Asking your friends and neighbors to see if they have had good or bad experiences with local appliance repair pros. Simply knowing that another person has had a good experience with a company prior to calling them lessens your chance of hiring a problem.
• If you have the time, call a few companies and ask them about your appliance issue. This will help you determine fair market price for your job. This does not mean you should always go with the lowest price, you should go with the company you feel most comfortable with and who you feel will fix the appliance correctly (and return if the repair is not working).
• Always ask if the company charges a fee for your service call. Many appliance repair pros charge a small fee for coming out and giving an estimate. These fees are often legitimate because many times it can be a very small issue that the contractor is called out for. If it takes 30 minutes to drive to a customer’s house just to discover that the job takes 30 seconds, the workers need to be compensated for their time. However, you can ask them to waive the fee if it is determined that there is actual work to perform (this is, of course, only if you hire them!)
• Ask if the company has insurance. Make sure this fact is stated somewhere in their contract, even if they have to write it in themselves. You take a risk of liability when you use companies that do not carry insurance.
• Ask if their parts & labor come with guarantees. Make sure you get this in writing. An inexpensive fix is not really inexpensive if it is not guaranteed to work!
• Always get a statement of work performed in writing. Keep this filed away. Again, everything that is important to you should be in writing!

The Rise Of The Oreck Vacuum

In this world of brand loyalty, Americans are especially dedicated to those product lines that they feel operate at a superior level. For this reason, the classic brands - the brands that consistently outperform all others - are those that we will go to great lengths to purchase over and over again. And when it comes to the products that we use in our homes, we are even more steadfast in our expectations. The Oreck vacuum, with its long held reputation for dependability and effectiveness, has also long held the public's admiration and support.

The Oreck Corporation, founded in Louisiana in 1963, was the brainchild of David Oreck who began by producing traditional upright vacuums for use in the hospitality industry - mostly as a cleaning tool used by hotel staff in the United States. The mission of the Oreck Corporation at that time was simple; to design a vacuum that could stand up to consistent use and still maintain its effectiveness; and to design it in such a way that hotel staffers who were using the vacuum could easily maneuver it throughout the course of a long day. The Oreck vacuum was subsequently designed to be lightweight and exceedingly portable.

Hotel staffers who used the Oreck vacuum on a regular basis were thrilled with its dependability; but more importantly they were pleased to have a vacuum that they could carry and transfer with little effort. The fact that the Oreck vacuum provided as much as it did in such a lightweight and compact design was what made it revolutionary.

Recognizing the demand that such a vacuum would have in the general consumer market, the Oreck Corporation soon began producing vacuums for retail sale. The public did, in fact, sit up and take notice and before long the Oreck vacuum was one of the most popular vacuum designs on the market.

Today, the Oreck vacuum is sold throughout the United States, Canada, and South America as its reputation grows for dependability, efficiency, and convenient and compact design. Households everywhere have come to rely upon Oreck's unique brand of efficiency.

Of course, with the changing times also came the implementation of additional designs and the Oreck vacuum continued to expand its services to meet the needs of a vastly different public. The product line offered by Oreck today includes a multitude of machines including the classic upright - different models of which offer varying filtration systems - everything from basic to hypo-allergenic to HEPA filtration; compact canister vacuum cleaners with varying capabilities; wet and dry vacuum cleaners; and even floor cleaners.

The Oreck vacuum can be purchased in authorized stores throughout North and South America, as well as through their website. And while some may consider the price to be a bit on the high side, the expense can be worth it - saving you precious time and money for many years.

But most importantly, the Oreck Corporation's reputation for keeping its products current and providing comprehensive customer service continues to draw a wider customer base every day. The future of the Oreck vacuum is one that will surely provide customers with a multitude of efficient and sophisticated products for many years to come.

Television Broadcasting By HDTV Satellite Using The Best Technology Available

Are you a player in the LCD HDTV arena? And are you asking yourself what this HDTV Satellite technology is all about? The history of HDTV or high definition television is a short read. Although the technology has been available for quite some time it has not been possible to package it in an economic and viable supply until recently.

What Comprises a HDTV Satellite System?

The components of this home entertainment system would basically be rounded up as:

*Television Set - HD compatible

*Satellite Dish

*HD Receiver

*HDTV Antenna

What do you get for the money?

A large number of channels, unbeatable screen clarity and enhanced reliability with the viewing screen being restricted only by your budget or room dimensions. The competition of HDTV is the cable television network. This network although giving the customer a wide range of stations fails to provide the key factor of pristine clarity of viewing pleasure. The panel LCD or plasma HDTV not only delivers this screen viewing it also looks extremely modern in keeping with the high definition television experience.

Decision Time Using Review Ratings

The most eminent factor in HDTV 's favor is the excellent picture quality received from a HDTV Satellite system in comparison to other mediums available today. The broadcast from local and international sources is delivered in a high quality digital format. The impressive quantity of channels broadcasting down from the satellite to your HDTV television set

is also a deciding factor.Improved satellite dish receivers which are considerably small in size in comparison to a few years back means that the satellite dish remains unobtrusively installed.

Some would argue, incorrectly, that the HDTV satellite system is somewhat affected by bad weather conditions which blocks the satellite transmission to your HDTV antenna, dish or receiver. This is not a factor as it is extremely rare to be affected by meteorological storms in the magnitude necessary to affect broadcasting reception.

Robot Vacuum Cleaners Or How R2-D2 Became iRobot Roomba

Time-starved gadget crazed home bodies have taken a new step towards the "Jetstones" cartoon version of house cleaning with a whole new generation of robot vacuums. Insert a couple of AA or D batteries. Select "go". The little round disc R2D2 like robot never complains. Instead, while you return to the sofa to continue watching a film or game, your robot vacuum "rolls up its microprocessor sleeves" and settles into the task of cleaning your rooms.

Where Robot Vacuums Come From - Star Wars Technology Origins. Robot vacuum cleaners like iRobot roomba didn't just walk onto the consumer market gadget stage without some lead-up technologies. No hard core gadgeteer will be surprised to learn that the modern era's first robot vacuum cleaners are modifications on a core technology of "artificially intelligent" mobile work machines utilized by NASA in extra-terrestrial exploration. Industrial production robots, fully programmable, handle welding, fitting, joinery and a wide range of process functions. Think also about robot pool vacuums, now becoming suburbia"s latest convenience craze. So, it"s no surprise that micro-processors should be re-directed from the PC world and manufacturing world into the home.

"A Small Step For Robots ... A Giant Leap For Ultra-Civilized Mankind". From sampling and collecting stones on Mars, robots morphed into programmable house cleaning tools that rival conventional vacuum cleaners for performance ... less the time savings of eliminating the human factor. "One small step for robots ... a great leap for mankind" might be the trade logo for the new generation of ultimate home-convenience devices.

How Effective Is Your Robot Vacuum? Robot vacuum technologists utilize their full programming kit bag of tricks to create a feature-rich cleaning tool. Getting started with a device like the Roomba? Easy stuff. For preparation, most robot vacuums only require that you remove loose large stuff from the floor or carpets ... like papers, cloth, cords or anything that might get sucked up and cause your robot vacuum "indigestion" ... just like an ordinary vacuum. Kitchen tile, hardwood floor, carpet, even concrete surfaces.

Hair, dirt, pet fur and dander, food ... any of the ordinary stuff that makes its way onto your floors can be handled by your robot vacuum.

Remote Sensors And Bump-Grind. Your robot vacuum literally bumps its way through your rooms ... sensing objects ... lightly tapping each object like the leg of a chair, then keeps spinning and moving.

With some robot vacuum cleaners, you can pre-set a "virtual" wall ... programming a stop-point into your robot so that he literally stops-on-a-dime. Simplicity is the key to using robot vacuum cleaners. Guesstimate your room's size ... then select small, medium or large on the control panel. Place your iRobot in the middle of the room and then walk away. The rest, as they say, is history.

Batteries And Re-Charging. Simplicity rules with robot cleaners like the roomba robot vacuum or other models. When your robot is not cleaning for you, he can rest his tiny 6-pound frame on a counter or elsewhere and receive a 11 to 15 hour meal of electrons from any household electrical outlet to re-charge to full room-cleaning capability.

Fully charged, a typical robot vacuum cleaner will last 1 hour or more.

Getting Un-Stuck. Like his human inventors, the best robot vacuums occasionally find themselves literally "stuck" ... an odd combination of object-space relationships where the bump-withdrawal fails to extract your robot ... or perhaps gorging on a large towel or a set of smelly socks forgotten under the chair ... Solution? Most robot vacuum models initially send off a "I'm stuck" higher pitched tone. If you don't hear his cry-for-help, your robot carries an on-board automatic shut-off feature. Situation handled without fuss or drama.

Handling Stairs. Vacuuming stairs in the best of conditions is a hassle! Onboard sensors communicate to your robot vacuum "stairs ... watch out ... stop ... do not proceed further! Result? The situation is "recognized". No damage occurs. But, you still have to sort out another way to do your stairs.

Convenience Tool For The Less Able. People injured or limited in any significant manner will reap huge benefits from the new age of robot vacuum cleaners. Light, smart, easy to program, the robots pose little physical risk and permit less able persons to keep their home clean, and ahead on their daily task responsibilities without needing others.

Understanding The Rating of Your Appliance

Electrical appliances are a standard in just about any home, but have different electrical requirements. So, how are electrical appliances rated?

The capacity of an electrical field to do work is measured in volts. The voltage used in normal household in North America differs from that used in Europe and other parts of the World. The normal household voltage in North America is normally called 110 volts although the actual voltage may differ. Electrical Appliances sold in North America would have a voltage rating of 110v. Certain larger appliances such as washing machines and dryers operate on 220v.

Voltage is the potential electrical flow, but the actual movement of electrical current is called amps. Amps are another electrical rating used on appliances. An appliance is said to "pull" a certain amount of amps. A larger amp rating on an appliance would indicate that it draws more electrical power into the unit when it operates. When an appliance is rated by it amp use, more amps would indicate a more powerful unit. A vacuum cleaner that pulls 12 amps would generate more suction power than one that is rated at 6 amps. Some vacuum cleaners with higher amp rating will advertise this fact on the face of the machine itself.

Another term used in the rating of electrical appliances is watts. Watts is a measurement of actual work performed by electricity. The watt is a familiar form of rating in a wide variety of electronic products. Audio speakers are normally rated in Watts. Wattage can be determined by the formula Amps x Volts = Watts. It can also be said concerning watts that the higher the watt number the more powerful the machine.

The various ratings of electrical appliances are used in different manners. Voltage rating is the most important as it determines the suitability of the appliance for use in certain conditions. Amp and Watt ratings are used to determine the relative power of an appliance as compared to other similar appliances. In most cases the voltage, amps, and watt ratings of an appliance are displayed on a label on the actual appliance. If this is not the case, the information can be found in the operator’s manual.

The watt and amp ratings can be viewed in two ways. Appliances with high amp and watt ratings are more powerful and the higher ratings would normally indicate that the appliance performs the work it is designed to do more efficiently. However, with the rising cost of electricity, people are looking for appliances that do the job required with the least amount of amps.

Do Portable Deep Carpet Cleaners Work Well?

Whatever your carpet cleaning needs are, whether they are for a small and delicate rug or a commercial sized office space, there is a portable carpet cleaner that can get the job done. It doesn't matter if you need a machine that will clean spots along the way or one that can hold gallons upon gallons of cleaners there is one out there that can tackle the job you have in mind.

Of course the one thing you want most in your portable carpet cleaning equipment is genuine portability. The irony is that what some people consider portable and what the rest of us find to be easily portable are not always the same thing. My definition moves along the lines of whether or not I can use it without breaking my back in the process. Professional carpet cleaners find those cleaners that can be mounted on the back of a truck and transported to be perfectly portable.

Everything in life I suppose is subjective. Small jobs that require mere spot cleaning should require nothing that can't be transported easily in the trunk of a car. Stanley Steamer and other carpet cleaning companies will have equipment, which to them is portable but would never fit into the trunk of my car.

Residential and Commercial Equipment can be moved

Portable cleaning equipment that is generally used for home use is typically a small steam cleaner with a built in extractor. These machines are fairly easy for most people to transport as well as to maneuver enough to clean your house. Some do opt to use two-piece of equipment however--one of which is used for the cleaning of your carpets and the other to extract the water. This is a better way of removing the water and allows the carpet, furniture, or drapes to dry much more quickly thus minimizing the risk of mildew.

Commercial equipment will perform the same functions but are generally built to much more rigorous specifications as they are used day in and out on many jobs along the way. These machines are much larger in size and generally must be transported on larger truck or vans then unloaded for use.

Portability may be subjective but most homeowners prefer the type of portability that can be stored in a closet and out of sight for a time. In addition to scrubbers and extractors, other portable carpet cleaning equipment include blowers (for drying the carpet) and heaters to keep the cleaners nice and steamy throughout the job. These are very helpful tools for large jobs.

Choosing the right equipment for your carpet cleaning needs is very important and often depends entirely on the size and scope of the job you are taking on. The ability of the person doing the job is another mitigating factor that should be considered as well. Check around town and see where you can find the best prices along with a machine that you feel will not break your back or budget in the steam cleaning process.

Help My Washing Machine Sounds Like its Trying to Escape

Your washing machine is shaking, bouncing, knocking and you are absolutely stunned you have know earthly idea what has possessed this once calm, sturdy piece of machinery. I have worked on, fixed, replaced and taken several washing machines the dump.

In all those experiences I have never quite experienced something so unnerving as that washing machine bouncing around like it was going to take off.

Why you ask is it doing that. The simplest answer is that the load you are washing is out of balance. When you put the load in the machine you accidentally put to many clothes on one side of the drum and it is rotating out of balance causing it to bang against the inside of the cabinet.

The solution to this problem is also very simple just open the door to the machine, wait for the machine to stop turning, then reach in and adjust the load. Now close the door and wait for the machine to start turning, if it is still out of balance then simply repeat the process of adjusting the load.

There are typically adjustable feet on the bottom of the machine it is important that you adjust or have someone adjust the feet so the machine is level. The feet can be rotated in and out to adjust the height of each corner.

It is not a good idea to let the machine to spin out of balance as it can cause the bearings to fail or the rubber seal at the bottom of drum to tear. That causes water to go everywhere, and is expensive to repair.

If your machine continues to rotate out of balance when there is no load in it then your machine has a possible bearing problem and you should call a repair man especially if it is a newer machine you would like to keep. If it is an older machine you may want to replace it with a more energy efficient one. I would still get the professionals opinion.

Hottub Water Therapy - Feeling Great is the Goal

Muscle relaxation is absolutely critical for relieving pain, as pain is usually caused by muscle tension (including tension headaches). Sometimes joint pain is mainly because of the muscles clamping much too tightly over joints, making them rub together more than is healthy for them. The solution? Spas and hydrotherapy can relieve stress on muscles and bones by making you feel weightless - and this can lead to relief of the symptoms of fibromyalgia and arthritis, and other aggravating conditions.

The body has many ways of eliminating wastes. One way is through sweating. Since the water in a hot tub or spa is so warm, it forces sweating, which helps clear away some of the build up of toxins throughout the body.

Other advantages to soaking in a hot tub include the release of endorphins through the whole body by the heat and pressure supplied by the many pulsating jets. Endorphins are a natural product that is produced by your body and it is considered a "happy drug". It makes you feel much better and reduces the amount of pain you are able to feel. A soothing massage from the jets also aids in the relaxation of your complete body.

There are a few warnings that should be considered. First of all, the vasodilatation, or opening up of the blood vessels, that occurs heats up your body and can raise your full body temperature up to as high as 102 degrees. This is not safe for very long, so it is recommended that you remain in the hottub or spa for up to fifteen minutes. Listening to your body is a key way to keep yourself safe and out of trouble.

Even though hottub hydrotherapy will lower blood pressure, it initially increases it due to the heart wanting to get rid of the extra heat out of your body. That means that people who have high blood pressure (especially if you have been prescribed multiple medications) should speak with their physician before trying hottub water therapy. Some other medical conditions may prevent hot tubs from being an optimal method of relaxation. Ask your doctor!

Learning about how our bodies work and finding other, possible ways to improve our quality of life can be a healthy goal. Find out about more health benefiting information and live well.

Dechlorinate Water Filters - You Don't Have To Taste That Chlorine In the Water

Did you know that chlorine could be very harmful to your heath? Not only could it make you sick, but it can also cause you to develop cancer. When it comes to chlorine, you will notice that your water has a certain, distinctive taste. It can be very harmful if you drink too much of the chlorinated water. If you have public water, you will notice that the local water plant will treat water and you won’t have to worry about things like germs or heavy metal poisoning, however, you may notice that the chlorine that they use to treat the water makes the water taste weird. Chlorine is a part of the treatment process and is used to kill the germs, however, no one has ever thought about all the harmful effects it has.

Chlorine is one of the most inexpensive ways to disinfect water. It is also a poison if taken in large dosages. As a gas, chlorine was used in WWI. The effects that it had on the soldiers were burning the lungs and body tissues when inhaled. You should know that chlorine is still harmful, even if it is placed on your water system. If you do not use a filter on your tap water, you might as well take a shot of chlorine. You need to make sure that you put a filter on your tap water so that you do not ingest so much chlorine.

It is a proven fact that it can also cause you to develop bladder, rectal, and breast cancer. If you are drinking water with the chlorine, you have just upped your chances of getting the cancers by 93%, with daily use of course. Chorine is actually the leading cause for bladder or rectal cancer. Once you have chlorine in the water, it will then create triohalomethanes, which are extremely harmful to the body.

Then because of the fact that most of the water you drink either ends up in the bladder or rectal, you then have vital cells being destroyed by the trihalomethanes. Then once diagnosed with these particular cancers, you have a 55% chance of dying from it. Breast cancer has just recently been linked to the chlorine in your water. It will up your chances of getting the disease by 50%

The only way to save yourself from harm is to get a filter for your tap water. Not only should you be concerned with the distaste that it will leave in your mouth, but you should also think about the ways that chlorine can harm you. If you filter your water, you will be able to consume fresh, clean, and healthy water.

Coffee Grinders - How To Find The One

When exposed to air, coffee beans will oxidize. Coffee grounds suffer this more so because they have a larger surface than the beans and lack the beans’ protective skin. Home coffee grinders allow you to stop the level of exposure and produce the freshest grind. Most importantly, grinding can be done when you need it.

Everything has a price, though. Picking the best grinder can make the messy and long process of grinding much more rewarding.

There are three main types – blade, crusher and burr. The crusher is the ancient way of using a pestle and mortar to mash the beans. This process is difficult and gives an uneven grind because it just crushes them – not highly recommended. Blade grinders chop. The blade whirls, slicing the beans into small grounds – still not the best because the grains are not the same size and not all the oils are released, varying the flavour and dissipating a lot of the flavour. However, burrs use motorised plates with teeth that are pyramid in shape, allowing for the perfect grind. Better burrs allow for varied grain sizes because the speed can be adjusted accordingly.

The burr allows for the perfect brew. Speed control keeps the heating of the beans low.

Burrs have two categories. Professionals prefer the conical. It is noisy however. Good ones can go up to 500 rpm. Top quality ones go up to speeds of 10 thousand rpm, with their blades spinning at about twenty to thirty thousand rpm. This allows for fine grinds for Turkish coffee, for example. Some come with a dial for continuous speed adjustments. Others have buttons for some varied 40 different speed adjustments.

Beyond that you should look for ones that are solid in construction, easy to clean and preferably less noisy. They should also include a brush for cleaning and easy to remove upper type burrs (blades). Beware of construction materials that cause static electricity. This can let the grounds stick to the blades and the container.

Other useful features include a timer and an auto-switchoff. It also helps to be able watch the beans as the grinding takes place. Without this you cannot decide if the grind is ready. So, try to find one that doesn’t use glass or darkish plastic as this hinders your view. You should be able to judge the grind by its colour, but if you cannot see them then this is a problem.

Finally, do your research and read all the reviews you can find about each grinder that interests you before you buy it. When you find the right one, you will be pleased with the fresh and flavoursome cup of coffee you produce.

The Coffee Grinder - The Perfect Grind

Roasting your own coffee beans is far easier than making wine at home. You can achieve excellent results.

There are many varieties of roasters available, but it can be done in a popcorn maker or frying pan. However, you must assure that your equipment is spotlessly clean. There is nothing worse than coffee infused butter or fish oil.

Get good quality beans. Darker roasts have a lot less caffeine than the lighter ones, but they are not as acidic.

Heat your beans between 223°C to 262°C, and be fully prepared to have plenty of smoke. Ventilate your room using a fan or your stove’s exhaust. There should be no real odour, but you may also want to open your windows wide and make sure no one else is home.

Add your beans, espresso maybe and turn the heat up. Don’t forget to disable any smoke detectors.

Some roasters have thermometers, but having a portable one is best for using a frying pan. Try a candy thermometer.

As the roasting progresses, your beans will start to turn a yellow colour and then go brown. How dark they get is your choice.

As your beans get hotter, they release water and oil. This will cause pressure within the bean. You will hear loud cracking sounds. This perfectly normal, but to ensure perfect roasting, to not over roast or burn some of the beans, continuously stir them. This will happen after about 4 to 7 minutes.

Your beans will start caramelising inside as the sugars begin to burn. Check the colour about every 30 seconds, but the degree of brownness is up to your personal taste.

If you keep roasting for enough time, you may hear a second very loud crack. The beans will be overdone and very dark. If you continue you will not be roasting, but burning them, removing the sugars. Most of us would not be able to stomach coffee made from this.

Empty your roasted beans into a colander, preferably metal to cool down. Jostle them a little to help cool them. You will notice that the beans’ thin skins will detach as you jostle them. These will need to be removed, usually using a cooking screen (meshed).

Experiment a little with small amounts of beans at a time to get varied levels of darkening and time. This will help you to develop the flavour that you prefer. However, stop the roasting process early, as the beans will continue to roast due to the heat that they still contain inside.

If you opt for the popcorn maker, get a machine that lets you jostle the beans to keep the air circulating and prevent them from sticking to the sides. Alternatively, use a cast iron frying pan for stovetop roasting. However, this method requires lots of watching and stirring. Once the roasting begins, it will continue rapidly. However, once your beans are cooled you can throw them into your coffee grinder and prepare that perfect homemade cup of delicious coffee.
