Using The Cool Ground To Cool Your Home

If you dig down five feet in the middle of a desert, the ground will be cool. You can use this inherent coolness to keep the temperature down in your home as well.

One of the things you notice when you visit a cave is the cool temperature. The outside air can be hot enough to boil an egg on the sidewalk, but once you step down into the cave, you encounter cool and dehumidified air. This is because the temperature below ground level tends to remain at a constant level. This temperature can be calculated roughly by knowing the average temperature of the above ground air. For example, the city of Chicago has an average temperature in the area of 72 degrees. This average comes from the fact that it drops to 10 degrees in the winter, and swelters at over 100 degrees in the summer. The 72 degree day is a rare, if welcome, break in the extremes.

It is the average, however, and the layers of earth tend to insulate very well. It is reasonable to assume that after centuries of this average temperature, any air trapped underground would settle out at this average temperature and maintain it. This has led to the idea that this constant temperature air underground could be tapped for both heating and passive air conditioning. If your home happened to be built on top of a large cave, you could run a pipe from your home to the cave. Using fans to cause circulation, the cool air could be pulled up from the cave, and the ambient air from the home could be pushed down into the cave.

Since many homes do not happen to be located on top of caves, the idea has been conceived of digging artificial caves under homes and laying pipes to connect them to the homes. A system like this would require only the power it takes to run the fans that would facilitate the proper circulation between the “cave” and the home. It would eliminate the use of compressors which draw the majority of power used in air conditioning.

Another version of this plan would involve the laying of long pipes underground. The idea here is that the “cave” is not necessary. Simply running the air underground through the pipes would allow the air to be cooled. An underground pipe system would be a bit expensive and awkward to install in an existing building. It would be a little less difficult in new construction as the pipes could be laid during the excavation that would take place in laying the foundation of the building.

Regardless of any initial expense, a passive underground system would need little or no maintenance, and beyond circulating fans, little or no energy consumption. Although passive pipe air conditioning, like solar powered air conditioning, is new and mostly experimental today, the combination of global warming and increased population is making an energy solution to air conditioning critical.

Can You Use The Sun To Cool Your Home?

When you think about the sun, heat is usually the first impression one gets. A recent twist on the idea has led to the possibility of cooling your home with the sun. Seriously!

Environmental concerns are a very important factor in a number of areas and air conditioning is one of them. The wide spread use of air conditioning has created ever increasing electrical energy demands, and the power generating capacity is struggling to keep up with this demand. During demand peaks created by hot spells, there have been power outages and brown-outs in the past. One of the ideas that has been developed to cope with this problem is the use of the sun as a power source. This seems a logical concept since the sun creates the problem by creating heat. How great it would be if the sun could also provide the solution.

In Europe, the technology for using solar energy for both heating and cooling is quite advanced and many larger building have been using a form of it for years. The method used is based on the thermo-chemical process known as sorption. Sorption takes two forms. When a liquid or gas is attached to a porous, solid material it is called adsorption. When the liquid or gas is taken in by liquid or a solid, it is called absorption. The European technology involves the use of a sorbant, usually silica gel. The silica gel is heated by the sun and is dehumidified. When water vapor or steam is added to the dehumidified gel, adsorption takes place and heat is released.

Basically, when heated ambient air is drawn through the system in what is called a heat reclamation rotor, the heat is drawn out of the air, cooling it. The cooled air is recycled back into the building. The major drawback to this system is the large size of the units, and of the area that must be exposed to the sun. This makes its use practical in large buildings, but not applicable for home use.

Solar energy for home use is an emerging technology also. However, the idea here is to use the energy to power existing air conditioning units rather than replacing them with new technology. Photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof converts solar energy into AC power that can be used to power the air conditioner. In most cases, the amount of power is not sufficient to run the unit, but can supplement the regular electrical supply. The major advantage here is that when the electrical demand is the highest, which would be during the peak daylight hours, the sun will be bearing down most directly on the PV cells.

There is a surge in power consumption during start up of an air conditioner unit. Solar photovoltaic cells can be used to keep the unit running at a very low speed during times it would normally be shut down. This can further reduce the regular electrical use by eliminating many of the starts and stops of the cycle. Solar energy is an emerging technology in a world that is seeking alternative sources of power. Hopefully, in the future, the sun, which creates the heat and humidity that we seek to eliminate with air conditioning, will provide the solution to our continued comfort.

Making Your Air Conditioner Last Longer

Air conditioners are not cheap. You definitely do not want to be buying a new one every year or so. A bit of preventive work can make them last.

One of the biggest problems with most air conditioning units made today is that they are tough, and well built. This may not seem like much of a problem, but what happens is that most home owners become very complacent about their air conditioners. They continue to run and run year after year, and many people tend to worry little about them as long as the air is cool and comfortable. The truth is that without routine maintenance, a normal air conditioning unit loses about 5% of its efficiency each year. This means that within a short time your powerful SEER 13 unit is working more like an older SEER 8.

A good air conditioner can last 15 years, or even longer, with just routine maintenance. It will also operate at its rated capacity for most of that period. Much of the maintenance that is required to keep your unit up to snuff is inexpensive and easy to perform. The first step is to make routine inspections of your unit to discover any potential problems. The best time to perform any air conditioner maintenance is a little bit before it is needed. Check all hoses for leaks and make sure the condensate tube is draining freely.

Filters are critical to the proper and economical operation of the air conditioning unit. They should be inspected often and changed or cleaned monthly. This is even more important during the summer months when there is a higher level of dust and pollutants in the air, and, of course, the units are running more frequently. Other methods of insuring maximum air flow through the system include cleaning and vacuuming of the registers and air vents. You should also insure that furniture and drapes are not blocking registers.

The outside compressor should be cleaned with a hose. Plantings should be kept at least a foot away, and grass and weeds should be trimmed to insure adequate air flow around the unit. Remove any debris from the fan area. During the winter months, the compressor should be covered. It is also a good idea to remove any window air conditioners during the winter, and store them until they are again needed. A yearly tune up of your air conditioner by a certified technician can cost between $50 and $100, but can result in as much as a 5% reduction in yearly operating cost.

You can also increase the life of your air conditioner by finding ways to not have to use it. Programmable thermostats can regulate temperature to decrease use at night or when the house is vacant. Simple things like ceiling fans or attic ventilation fans can reduce the demand on the air conditioner. Even planting trees to increase shade or using drapes over windows facing the sun can help. Reduction of use combined with proper maintenance can increase the life span of any air conditioner. One important safety consideration is to make sure that all power is turned off to the air conditioner before performing any maintenance.

Efficient Air Conditioners Save You Money

Cool air feels good, but high utility bills do not. Efficient air conditioners can save you serious money over the life of the system and keep you just as cool.

When you are considering the efficiency of an air conditioner, size is everything. Oversized and undersized can be equally bad. When a unit is oversized, it will cycle over and over. The constant starting and stopping of the unit will pull more energy, and the dehumidifying properties of the cooling coils will not have time to fully operate. This will result in moisture being blown into the duct works and the ambient air with each start up. If the unit is undersized it will not be able to generate enough cooled air to maintain the desired temperature, and will run constantly.

Air conditioners are rated on their efficiency using a measurement known as the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). This measurement is the cooling output divided by the energy consumption with climate and certain other variables factored in. The higher the SEER number, the more efficient the unit, is the general rule. Older units might have a SEER as low as 7 or 8. For a long time, The Department of Energy mandated a SEER of 10 as the minimum for all newly installed units. This figure has recently been raised to 13, and is a topic for debate currently. Some units are capable of SEER ratings as high as 17 or 18.

Window units use EER (Energy Efficient Ratio) rather than SEER, but the principle is basically the same. The principle of “bigger is not necessarily better” applies to window units also. Humidity plays such an important role in comfort, and is often more important than just mere temperature. Smaller units tend to remove more moisture because they have longer runs. When a unit first starts it actually blows a bit of moisture out of the unit. Once the cycle is running smoothly, the condensation of moisture on the cooling cools begins. Therefore, a longer running cycle is going to provide a more comfortable environment.

There are other factors that will increase the efficiency of an air conditioner and result in a reduction of operating expense. A programmable thermostat is one such idea. The thermostat can be set to automatically raise the ambient temperature at night during sleep or when the home is vacant during working hours. A ten degree raise in temperature setting during these time periods can result in a ten percent reduction in operating costs.

Properly maintaining your system will also result in increased efficiency. Routine changing of filters is one of the most important maintenance requirements. Efficiency of air conditioning is an issue that goes beyond savings to the owner of the home or building. It is an issue of national concern. The wide spread use of air conditioning has created a large strain on electrical power demand especially during heat waves. Power generation is struggling to keep up with demand and brown-outs have become frequent during periods of high demand. Air conditioning efficiency takes place on an individual level, but the air conditioning industry is working to improve efficiency with improved models and the development of new technology as well.

Multiple Location Air Conditioner

If you are considering an upgrade to your air conditioning, you are going to have to choose a system. Here we cover a unit that is actually separated into two locations.

A dual or separated air conditioner is one where the two main components of the unit are split between two physical locations. Although the initial installation cost is generally higher for a split type air conditioner, they tend to be more energy efficient in the long run. This savings is energy will quickly recoup the installation cost. There is a big noise reduction as the compressor is located in the outside unit. These air conditioners are suggested for use in places where there is a space problem.

The air handling unit is on the inside. This consists of the evaporator section and the duct work that circulates and delivers the air. The fan motor is also located inside along with the filters. The evaporator coil is located inside also. The evaporator coil is where the refrigerant actually vaporizes and the heat adsorption takes place. The thermostat which controls the system is located indoors also, of course, but usually at a more central location where a temperature measurement can be more effectively made.

The divided unit is often referred to as having a cold side and a hot side. The cold side is the indoor unit where cooling actually takes place. The hot side is the outdoor unit where heat is given up from the refrigerant. The hot side unit has a fan assembly to aid in the removal of heat from the condenser coils. It also has its own control logic.

Split air conditioners are used in homes as well as business buildings. Many office buildings and retail establishments use split types due to the larger size of the condenser units. The larger size condensers can be located more easily outdoors behind the buildings, or in some cases, on the roofs of the buildings. Very large buildings and most multi-story buildings have problems using split systems due to the distance between the units. Duct work becomes unmanageable at such distance and results in too much inefficiency. Water chiller units are generally more appropriate for these types of structures.

Another type of split system is known as the mini split system air conditioner. Since an estimated 30% of energy consumption results from duct work loss of cooling, the mini split system eliminates duct work. It operates more like a window unit except that it is connected to an outside condenser by means of a conduit. The conduit requires only a 3 inch hole in the wall to connect the units. The conduit contains the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing, and a condensate drain. These systems are popular because of their small size and flexibility. They can be floor units, some of which are mounted on casters and can be moved to where they are most needed. They can also be mounted on the walls or ceilings. As many as four individual units can also be connected to a single outdoor unit.

Make It Start with a Door Switch – Dishwasher Repair

You wouldn't even know your dishwasher had one until it isn’t working. These little switches are tucked inside the control panel of your dishwasher and most times are a part of the door latch. The door latch pulls the door securely to the main body of your dishwasher and prevents water from leaking during a cycle. If your dishwasher doesn't start, it could be due to a faulty door switch.

How the door switch works

When the dishwasher door is open, the switch is off. Inside your dishwasher tub will be a metal or plastic prong. Close and latch the door. The prong will depress the door switch completely and the circuit will close allowing the dishwasher to start. Check the prong to make sure it's not loose or bent and it's properly activating the door switch.

It is important to disconnect the dishwasher from its power source before attempting any repair. You can unplug the dishwasher from the outlet, remove the fuse from your fuse box, or flick the breaker switch on your circuit panel. This will prevent you from getting an electric shock.

What a door switch looks like and where it's located

Typically a dishwasher door switch is an inch long. It can be black or red and has metal prongs called terminals protruding from the body. Some door switches have two terminals and some have three.

The terminals can be a common terminal (COM), normally closed terminal (NC) or a normally open terminal (NO). Switches with only two terminals will either have a COM and a NO, or a COM and an NC. Door switches with three terminals have COM, NC, and a NO.

Your dishwasher's door switch will be behind the control panel on the front of the unit. It may be necessary to remove the inner panel of the door first. You can do this by removing a few screws. The screws at the bottom of the door are for the hinges. You do not need to remove the whole door for this repair.

Once the inner panel is removed you may find another smaller panel covering the back of the control panel held in place with screws or clips. By removing this panel you will gain access to the latch assembly housing the door switch.

How to remove the switch

Carefully use needle nose pliers to pull the wires leading from the harness off the terminals. For door switches that have a locking clip, depress the lever as you gently pull the harness away from the terminal.

Take your time while removing switches that are a part of the latch assembly or that have a bracket. If you rush and break the switch's housing you will end up having to replace more parts.

How to test your door switch

Use an ohmmeter to test the switch for continuity. This test is for door switches with three terminals.

1. Set your ohmmeter to measure resistance at a scale of Rx1.
2. Touch the metal tips of the test leads together and zero your ohmmeter by adjusting the thumbwheel in the front of the meter until the needles reads "0" on the scale.
3. Touch one meter lead to the COM terminal and the other lead to the NO terminal. Do not push in on the actuator.
4. Your meter should give a reading of infinity, meaning the circuit is open, and there is no continuity.
5. Without moving the meter's leads, press down on the actuator until you hear a 'click'.
6. With the 'click' of the actuator, the meter should produce a resistance reading of zero ohms. This means the circuit is closed and continuity is present. (You will only hear this click with a door switch with three terminals.)
7. Keep the meter lead that is touching the COM terminal in place, but move the other meter lead from the NO terminal to the NC terminal.
8. When the actuator is released, you should receive a resistance reading of zero ohms.
9. Now set your ohmmeter to its highest resistance scale and touch one meter lead to the NO terminal and the other meter lead to the NC terminal.
10. The resistance reading between these two leads should be infinite.
11. Finally take a resistance reading from both the NC terminal and the NO terminal to any metal mounting hardware that is a part of the switch assembly. You should receive a normal reading of infinity.

Any readings that differ from the tests above are signs of a defective door switch that will need to be replaced.

Replace the old switch with a new one, using the same process as explained above. Reassemble the inner door panel and reconnect your dishwasher to its power supply. Don't forget to replace your fuse or turn the breaker switch back on. Run your dishwasher through a cycle to make sure it's working properly.

My Dishwasher is Not Starting - What Can It Be?

The dishes are in the dishwasher and you close the door. You hit the start button and nothing happens. What now?

First make sure the dishwasher is getting power. Check your fuse box for blown fuses. If you have circuit breakers, check to see if they are tripped. Make sure plug from your dishwasher is secure in the outlet.

If power is not the problem, take a closer look at some of the electrical parts of your dishwasher. The most common part to fail is the door switch.

A door switch is used to start and stop your dishwasher. It's a safety feature that won't allow water to flow with the door open. With a faulty door switch, there is a chance your dishwasher won't start at all.

Dishwasher door switches are about an inch long. They are usually black but can be red. There are metal prongs on the body of the switch called terminals. Some door switches have two terminals and some have three.

If your door switch is OK, check the timer assembly. This controls when and how long power is sent to other controls on your dishwasher. If these controls don't receive power, they won't work.

The timer assembly contains a motor. Check this motor as well. It is often cheaper just to replace the timer motor rather than the complete assembly.

My last suggestion is to check the cycle selector switches. These switches indicate cycles for washing, drying, and setting the temperature of the water. If one of your switches is the problem your dishwasher may not start.

Dishwasher cycle selector switches tell the timer which cycle to run by opening and closing electrical circuits. Most selector switches are six to eight inches long. They are usually black and have terminals.

By testing each one of these parts with an ohmmeter you should be able to determine why your dishwasher is not working. It is possible for other parts to fail but these are the most common parts to check.

Tips for Finding the Right House Plan

Identify your outer style - what homes styles are you drawn too? French Country, Traditional, Spanish , Cape Cod, Colonial or Craftsman. When searching for the right house plan it is important to choose one that not only meets your individual needs but also keeps in mind the style of home that is most appealing to you.

Identify how your family lives -will you need formal spaces, recreational spaces, informal spaces, indoor-outdoor spaces, Determine if you prefer a one story or a two store home. Also determine the number of bedrooms and bathrooms will you need. This will help narrow your search for the right house plans. Keep in mind the lot characteristics including dimensions, natural landscaping and future marketability of the home. Your lifestyle is a key consideration in selecting a house plan. This will help you identify your style and keep a record of the features that you might want to incorporate into your home plan. As you perform your walkthroughs, take a camera so you can take pictures of the various homes you visit and key features of each home that you want to remember.

Search through stock home plans – Research styles and plans on the Internet. You can also purchase house plans on the web or in books at your local new or used bookstore. You should be able to get hundreds of home plans through these sources for little or no money. These house plans can be modified to meet your needs. Also visit new home builders in your area to get great house plan ideas.

Can't find that perfect home floor plan? - Find a reputable architect who can custom design the perfect house plan for you. Make sure to research the architects in your area and visit their work if at all possible. Using the notes, magazine clippings and photograph you've collected the architect should be able to design a home that is a perfect fit.

Building Codes-Be sure that any house plan you select complies with national and local building codes. The house plans should include necessary drawings, specifications and schedules for bidding, permits, and construction.

A permit and a promise

The reality in the Gulf Coast of Mississippi can be seen in the building permits in the front window of almost every home fading fast due to the hot summers sun. They are analogous to the hopes of the occupants battling insurance companies, waiting on long promised grants, and waiting on volunteers to complete work when materials become available.

It is impossible to reconcile the incongruity between volunteers helping the people of Waveland and developers seeking to profit from reconstruction. And added to that dilemma is the reality that neither money nor an updated building code is going to save the area from the next devastating storm with a 20 foot tidal surge. It happened before in 1969, it happened in 2005, and it will happen again. The rest of the world believes this is all “fixed” and have moved to other endeavors and interests.

Not an instant soluntion

We, as volunteers, toil on as this is all part of the long term recovery plan for those that have chosen to stay. Owners of 80,000 homes in Mississippi want to get their homes built in the next six months. Reality dictates it will take up to five years. Someone will be first, someone will be last. All are on one waiting list or another. All believe they are at the top of the list somewhere and no one wants to burst their bubble and suggest that we might have to go to a lottery for volunteer assistance in order to make this equitable.

All that debris

Summer has hidden a lot of the remaining debris in the vegetation. Winter approaches fast and nature will reveal all that long lost debris from under the vines of summer. FEMA is left to track down and haul off the dwindling elusive debris one piece at a time and note the spiraling unit cost of cleanup. Now it’s down to “hunt and peck” whereas before it was everywhere and within easy reach.

The long term plan?

The Long Term Recovery Committees battle politics – both internal and external brought on by the lack of true leadership, funds, the never ending grant writing saga and a critical shortage of Case Mangers – paid or volunteer. Post traumatic stress is showing clearly on the long term volunteers who have remained steadfast despite the overwhelming demands on their time and dwindling volunteer resources due to lack of preemptive marketing. No one allowed a budget for a marketing plan to recruit volunteers. No one is truly marketing on a National scale as there is no entity in charge of that part of the equation. Nor has any organization stepped in to take on that task although many have suggested it would be a “good idea” at the never ending meetings coordinators and case managers attend on a weekly basis.

The Hancock Long Term Recovery Committee can not even agree to give its participating members a list of the homes they have accepted into the program – the net result some organizations find themselves working on a home that is on the LTRC list by accident and not by design thus complicating the LTRC response. Of the 46 projects the LTRC have accepted that fit their stringent guidelines – only one has been completed and it has been weeks since any of the Case Mangers have been given an update. Any complaints are ignored and emails remained unanswered with the committee leaders believing the problems will go away if they avoid the issues.

An incomplete census

And the success is measured one house at a time – and events are truly a joyous. No one really knows how many – no one entity is collecting the data. Prior to the storm Waveland had 10,000 residents. At the anniversary of Katrina in 2006 it was estimated that 2,500 had come back home. No one really knows – the needs assessment for Hancock County has only returned 1400 complete responses for the entire County. By design the method of data collection for the Needs Assessment was going to reveal a hit and miss response as there was no follow up on the non responsive addresses. Paperwork is so overwhelming that most have long tired of requests to fill in forms – so a non responsive address does not reveal a true result.

How many volunteers?

Nor do we know how many volunteers are on the ground, the organizations they represent, or their long term plans on continued assistance. There never was a mandate to register the volunteers or the organizations. The structure of assistance is a conglomerate that forces the home owners to go from church to church, disaster relief organization to disaster relief organization – registering on each and every list they can find.

Consclusion

The lack of an overall plan for reconstruction is clearly showing in the end result – slow return of the region to its former population levels, and the fact that only 12,000 trailers have been returned in Mississippi alone in over a year since the storm.

It is time for a Volunteer Summit with all participating Volunteer Organizations invited in order to develop a comprehensive plan and elect panel to oversee the volunteer response and develop a marketing plan to attract more volunteers. This panel needs a true leader; consisting of members with a comprehensive vision and the patience and wisdom of Jobe who truly have worked in the trenches on the ground and know the nuts of bolts of what it takes to get the job done. They must be able to separate themselves from ego, overwhelming personalities, personal agendas and individual mission statements of the participating organizations and work towards an end result that benefits all the victims equitably despite their varying fiscal abilities to recover. It is time to develop a comprehensive recovery Master Plan.

Why Should I Cover My Air Conditioner During The Off Season?

Air conditioning manufacturers make rugged, high quality products that are designed to withstand the elements i.e. snow, wind, rain, sun, and extreme heat/ cold. However, an air conditioner's filters, coils and fins require regular maintenance for the unit to operate effectively and efficiently throughout its years of service. Unlike the evaporator coil, the condenser coil is exposed to unfiltered outdoor air. Air borne dirt will become lodged in the condenser when the outdoor environment is dusty, or if there is foliage near by. Depending on where you live dirt can build up very quickly. Just about everything that contacts the coil surface can have an insulating effect. Dirt, dust, seeds, bugs, foliage, grease, corrosion, pollution, and even bacteria and other microorganisms can act as an insulating barrier. Anything that touches the coil reduces the heat transfer of unwanted heat from the refrigerant to the outside air.

Air conditioning manufacturers design equipment to achieve the highest SEER level of efficiency using the least amount of refrigerant. The systems are perfectly balanced and anything that affects the heat transfer creates an imbalance which drastically affects performance. A dirty coil reduces heat transfer which causes temperature and pressure of the refrigerant entering the compressor to increases above normal levels. The compressor will than work harder and draw more amps to keep up. The cooling capacity of the system will be greatly reduced and the mechanical components will be significantly stressed. A dirty coil means a higher operating cost, more wear and tear on the compressor and fans, and inadequate cooling.

Coils that have little maintenance performed often become clogged with seeds and dirt over time. If the condenser airflow is restricted on a hot day the compressor head and cylinders will become extremely "hot". The oil will than begin to break down and lose its ability to lubricate causing accelerated wear and allowing contaminants to enter the system. This can cause rings, pistons and cylinders to wear resulting in lower compression, leaking valves, and metal debris in the oil. Once this occurs compressor failure will soon follow. Air conditioners are a closed loop system and changing the oil is not a normal or easy procedure. The oil used in air conditioning systems is extremely resilient but will prematurely break down if the system is not looked after. Imagine trying to drive your car for 10 years without ever changing the oil. When a hermetic compressor fails the only way to fix the system is to replace the compressor. This involves opening the system, having the refrigerant and oil removed, and filter dryers installed to clean up the system of moisture and acid that will be introduced from opening the system and left from the failure. This is a very costly procedure and many systems at this point are not worth fixing.

Are Expensive Hair Straighteners Worth The Money?

The increase in usage of hair straighteners (flat irons, hair irons) has meant that we now have an ever growing selection of straighteners to choose from. However, it seems that more and more of them are becoming increasingly expensive and this article goes some way in exploring what you are getting for your money and more importantly are they worth the high price tag?

Firstly, the price range of flat irons varies quiet considerably with the cheapest one around $10 and the most expensive ones close to $200. Given such a price range it is clear that there is likely to be a significant difference in both quality and performance of these irons. The best way to establish the difference is to first look at the features of the cheapest, most expensive and one from the mid-price range to see if there are any clues to what extra features, if any, you are paying for,

The following are some typical features found on hair straighteners in varying price ranges:

Cheapest ($10-$40) - Two heat settings: Low for fine, easy-to-style hair and High for hard-to-style hair. - Goldtone plates. - Power indicator light - Ideal for smoothing and straightening curly hair. - 3/4 inch plates

Based on my research there are a number of conclusions to draw about each of the price ranges.

The cheaper flat irons tend to have a smaller plate width, do not have ceramic or Tourmaline plates (which give much better results) and they don't have fine temperature controls i.e. they typically a number of preset temperatures for different hair types. These flat irons tended to be geared towards occasional use and for finer hair rather than for thick or curly hair. They have a shorter life, especially if used every day.

Mid-range flat irons tend to use Ceramic or Tourmaline plates, which were on average at least 1.25 inches in width. Obviously the wider the plates the quicker and easier it will be to straighten your hair. Models in this range can handle all hair types and are made by some of the better-known makers. They also have much better temperature controls which go up to as high as 200°C which is needed for really difficult curly, coarse hair.

The most expensive straighteners were also made using Ceramic plates and more of them did use Tourmaline, which gives even smoother results than ceramic. The plate width on average tends to be wider and the overall constructional quality just that little bit better. The most expensive model, $195, researched is made by one of the top makers and comes highly recommended by the hair industry. It is exceptionally well made, having seen one at my local stylists, but I also suspect just the name alone will add $10-$20 dollars on the price tag.

Overall it all comes down to how much you can afford to spend but I would strongly recommend that you save up the dollars and go for something in the $80-$130 price range. Within this range you will get all the key features you should have in a good flat iron: fine temperature control for different hair types, heats up quickly, fits well in your hand, and has a plate width of at least 1 inch. You will also get a well-made straightener, which will still work for in years to come.

If you really think about it, it’s the small appliance parts that make your everyday life so much easier. You wake up in the morning and you use an oven toaster – those are small appliance parts working right there. In the late afternoon in the office, you pour yourself some coffee from the coffeemaker – those are small appliance parts working again.

Indeed, most of our day is spent depending on small appliance wonders, and it’s only right that we learn to use them safely and that we prolong their useful lives by taking care of them. Below are some useful tips.

Follow safety instructions. Never forget to read the manufacturer’s handbook, because it contains pertinent information about the care and use of your small appliance and its parts. Be extra careful with small kitchen appliances – not all of them can get wet. Never plunge small kitchen appliances in dishwasher water, for example, unless the handbook tells you that it’s safe. Negligence or simple actions like this can hurt you.

Be careful where you plug appliances. Make it a habit to plug your small appliances directly into wall outlets whenever you can. If you have to use extension cords, read the cord’s electrical rating first; it should be able to handle wattage that is either at least equal to or more than your small appliance’s wattage. Overloading can cause your small appliance parts to ignite and possibly cause a fire. Also, remember to turn your small appliance off before you unplug it. Never attempt to pull out the plug by pulling the cord; instead, firmly hold the plug and then disconnect.

Clean small appliances with proper chemicals. You can possibly damage small appliance parts if you clean them incorrectly or use the wrong chemical, so again, refer to your manufacturer’s manual. Some nonstick surfaces can be cleaned with off-the-rack cleaners, but be careful not to do this too often, as it may cause surface chipping or fading.
