What is a glue board? A glue board (aka sticky board or gluepad) is a piece of stiff card with very heavy adhesive on one side. It is inserted into a fly killer machine.

What is a fly killer machine? It is a device that attracts flying insects by shining ultra violet light and then traps them.

What is ultra violet (uv) light? It is light just like any other light. It just happens to be invisible to humans but not to flies, who are extremely partial to it and tend to eagerly fly towards it. In recent years there has been many stories about dryers catching on fire*. Should we be concerned? Yes of course. We should take seriously anything that may put our family at risk.

Was the problem the dryer? Rarely.

After investigating it is usually determined to have been the venting within the home catching on fire, and not the dryer.

The drying process……

When clothes are being dried inside your family dryer there are two processes happening. Firstly, heat is applied to the air inside the dryer drum as it turns. This raises its internal temperature to approximately 165 degrees Fahrenheit and causing moisture to be driven out of the clothes by evaporation. Secondly, a constant flow of air is passed through the clothes. Surprisingly, the real trick to efficiently dry clothes is not the heat, but rather this vast volume of air.

Most people think the purpose of venting is to push the heat and lint outside. Actually, its primary purpose is to dump the moisture outside the home. This job is accomplished easily when the dryer is near an outside wall.

The venting pipe……

In many new houses the laundry room is located in the centre of the home, close to the family room or kitchen. If located upstairs it is often between the bedrooms, to allow easier access to laundry. Easier access, but the distance from the dryer to an outside wall is substantially longer. This leads to the crux of our problem. The venting is either too long, or has become restricted.

It is more difficult to push air down a long venting pipe than a short one. When the venting is too long the excess air can cause the venting to misbehave. This results in the moisture and lint collecting in the venting, rather than being dumped outside.

Taken to extremes lint can block the venting closed. When this happens it can cause the dryer to overheat. The normal drum temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit can quickly shoot up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. It may even get hot enough to allow lint in the venting to ignite.

For this reason manufacturers now suggest a maximum venting length of 15 feet. Excluding the first two elbows.

True venting length……

If you want to know the true equivalent length of dryer venting, calculate the following:

1. Measure all the straight lengths and add them together

2. Count the number of turns or elbows, and multiply this number by 4

3. Add up the totals of steps 1 and 2

Example 20 feet of venting with 4 turns would actually be:

20 feet + 4X4 feet = 36 feet

Don’t be surprised by the true equivalent length of your venting. In modern homes it can be substantially longer than the manufacturers suggested maximum.

Watch for these signs……

If the blockage becomes critical the dryer will stop doing its job properly. As a homeowner watch for the following signs that the venting may be starting to block.

1 Clothes coming out wet
2 Excess lint left on clothes at cycle end
3 Inside of dryer feels wet
4 Taking too long to dry a load
5 Clothes very hot at end of cycle
6 Electrical consumption greatly increased

Since you can't move the laundry room the best thing you can do is be aware that the problem exists. Consider taking down the venting and cleaning out the lint buildup during your annual spring-cleaning. Also, regularly walk outside and check the vent cap where it exits your house. Remove any lint buildup and make sure the flap moves freely.

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an electric cooling and heating system used to compress and decompress gas to heat or cool a house. This mechanical device pumps heat from a cooler to a warmer location and can extract heat from air, water or the earth. Heat pumps functions like an air conditioner in the summer and an electric furnace in the winter, thus encompassing both a heating and cooling unit in one device. The COP, or coefficient of performance, which calculates the ratio of heat output to electric power consumption, measures the performance of a heat pump.

Heat pumps are the most resourceful form of electric heating in moderate climates, and cool a house by collecting the heat inside the house and effectively pumping it outside. There are three types of heat pumps that one can install: air-to-air, water source and ground source. Heat pumps can collect heat from air, water or ground and can utilize the same to heat or cool your home. When installing a heat pump at home, one should consider using an energy-efficient heat pump system, keeping in mind the climate of the region.

For instance, air source heat pumps are a good option for mild and moderate climate regions, and ground source or geothermal heat pumps are efficient in climates with similar heating and cooling loads. The most common types of heat pumps are the air-source and ground-source heat pumps. Although ground source heat pumps are more expensive to install, they are more efficient and less noisy.

If the fireplace has been empty, redesigned or used for display purposes this may not be the case. There are a limited number of approved materials for this purpose, including concrete slabs, pre fabricated Approved Stove Boards, ceramic tiles or stone, but again consult a professional to be sure your fireplace itself meets the necessary standards

The Importance of Maintaining Your Air Conditioner

The summer has finally hit and now you are spending more time indoors with the air conditioner on. You have the thermostat set on 75 degrees and are feeling pretty good until you realize that its getting hotter inside. Before you know it, it is 90 degrees in your house and you are calling the air conditioning repair company. Problem is that it is the busy season and they may not be able to get to you for a week. What a disaster. The sad thing is that this could have probably all been prevented with a little maintenance.

To have a smooth running HVAC system, you need to have a program of regular maintenance. Before every cooling season, have an air conditioning service come check your system. It is usually a minimum charge and can save you hundreds of dollars by catching problems early. It will also prevent the aggravation of having no air conditioning.

In a normal A/C service check, the company will perform the following tests. They will check the condensing unit's coils, the compressor, the belts, operating pressures, operating temperatures and the Freon level. They will typically oil any components that need oil such as the fan and condenser. The cost of the service is usually fairly cheap and most companies will also run specials in the spring. Keep an eye out for a sale flyer.

There are also things that you yourself can do to help maintain your homes HVAC system. The most important thing of course is to change your air filter often. They only cost a buck or two and protect not only your air quality but also keep dirt from clogging your AC coils. Replace them at least once a month. Another simple thing you can do is to hose off your outside AC compressor. At least once a month, take a hose and rinse off the unit to clear it of dirt, dust, grass clippings and leaves. If the unit becomes clogged, it will have to work much harder to get your home cool. Lastly, do not turn your unit off completely in the summer. Is Your Laundry Room Costing You Money?

The price of energy is going up all the time, and you're probably looking for ways to save on your house bills. As it turns out, your least favorite room may be one of your biggest energy hogs. I'm talking about the laundry room.

1. Avoid washers and dryers with lots of fancy features.

If you're shopping for a new washer and dryer, stick to the basics. More expensive machines may have extra cycles, electronic control panels, and other fancy features, but they don't wash clothes any better than basic units. Those perks usually just add to the operating cost of the machine. (Not to mention, more doohickeys means more doohickeys that can break, requiring the hiring of a repairman...)

2. Use cold water.

A hot water load uses four times as much energy as a cold water load. You may want to do your whites in hot, but towels and linens are fine in cold. Actually, the majority of your clothes are fine done in cold water, unless they're very dirty (just make sure to use liquid detergent, as some powders only dissolve in very hot water).

3. Don't use "warm-rinse" cycles.

Many of the washers on the market today feature warm-rinse cycles. According to experts (yes, there really are laundry experts), you never need warm water to rinse your clothes, and you can waste $50+ a year on this feature.

4. Nice day? Dry your clothes outside.

Hanging a clothesline between two trees won't cost you anything beyond the initial investment of a package of clothespins from the dollar store.

5. Clean the lint trap.

Assuming suggestion #4 didn't fly for you, and you're sticking to your dryer, at least make sure you clean out the lint trap after every load. The dryer actually has to work harder, thus using more energy, when the trap is full.

6. Don't use the maximum dryer setting.

Unless you're doing a load of towels or other hard-to-dry items, don't use the dryer's maximum setting. A middle setting (between minimum and maximum) works fine for most clothes. In addition, it saves you pennies a load, which adds up to hundreds of dollars over the life of your dryer.

Every house or office today is equipped with a multitude of connectors. Connectors are devices used for mating and de-mating electrical power connections.

Connectors are responsible for power transfers and information transfers among machines and people that are spread over different locations. This is usually a mechanical or optical coupling device that provides a demountable connection between two fibers or a fiber and a source or detector. Gas compressors are mechanical devices that store large quantities of gas inside a tank that occupies a very small volume. There are many different types of gas compressors that feature different abilities and properties. Normally, gas tends to occupy as much space as possible. That is, if a small amount of gas is placed inside a bottle, it will occupy the whole bottle. This totals a compression pressure that is 7^3 (343) times higher than the normal atmospheric pressure.

Basic Air Conditioning Repairs

A regular fault that can afflict many air conditioners is when they appear to be working ok, but they just aren’t cooling us anymore. If you find yourself in this situation, then the good news is that it most likely only needs cleaning. It is pretty straightforward to clean the air conditioner yourself, but as with any electrical item, care must be taken. You’d be well advised to thoroughly examine the owner’s manual before you start.

Before you begin any maintenance on your air conditioner, make sure the power is switched off! The shut off panels are normally located on the air conditioner, but if you are having trouble finding then just shut off the power to your home. Also be sure that there’s no debris near the condenser.

Now you’re ready to see what the problem is with the air conditioner. Firstly, take the grill cover off the condenser. Then gently clean the fins with either a brush or a cloth. Shedding Light on Halogen Lights And Bulbs

There are 32 light fixtures blazing away in an average American household. These are the lights in your fridge, hallway, workshop, and porch. Most of these light bulbs are cheap two-for-a-dollar incandescent, screw-type bulbs. This is remarkable because the incandescent bulbs have been around for over a century using the same technology. Although these bulbs still suffice for the lighting needs of the average household, people have become discriminating and looked for other options. Popular choices for many households are halogen lights and bulbs. They are preferred over the incandescent varieties because they emit light that are of whiter and brighter nature. Also, these halogen lights and bulbs generally last longer than ordinary incandescent lights.

How do these halogen lights and bulbs differ from the incandescent lights? Their difference primarily lies on the principles governing their functions. Incandescent lights work by having electricity flow through a fine filament of tungsten inside the bulb filled with argon gas. This action causes the filament to resist the electric flow, which makes the argon gas heat up. The heat causes the argon gas to glow and emit light. Miniscule tungsten particles evaporate and accumulate on bulb walls as soot. As the tungsten burns out, the filament grows weak and ultimately, burn out. There are key disadvantages to this process. First, the soot reduces light emission, resulting in duller light output. Second, the soot weakens the tungsten filament and makes it brittle, hence, promoting faster burnout. Given these problems, incandescent lights are best suited for low traffic areas where soft lighting are better appreciated like the bedrooms.

The function of halogen lights are similar to those of incandescent bulbs, but with key structural differences. Halogen lights and bulbs are composed of peanut-sized and pressurized bulbs inside larger outer shells. The inner bulbs are halogen chambers. The halogen from these bulbs direct the evaporating tungsten to the filaments. As a result, the tungsten filament is constantly rebuilt. Decreased outer shell soot maintains bright light output. The rebuilding of the tungsten filament also makes the halogen lights last longer. The brighter and whiter light of the halogen bulbs make them suitable for high-traffic areas like hallways, living spaces, and work areas.

Jacuzzis - Hot Tubs

You will not believe how good it makes your tired worn out body feel. I have the water temp set at 102 degrees in both the winter and summer. I know people who set the temp lower in the summer or even turn the heater off. Not me, I like it hot at all times. I turn the jets to hit the spots that hurt the worse and just let them hit the area. The hot water and jets works on my body and relaxes me. I found that going in the Jacuzzi, not only helps with the aches and pains, but relaxes me, that I get a good nights sleep.

To me, a Jacuzzi is a lot like a swimming pool. You need to check the chemicals in them and change out the filter. I am very lucky that both my Jacuzzi and swimming pool uses the same kind of filter.

Jacuzzi's are fun to have but you have to be careful with young children. I wouldn't advise letting children in a Jacuzzi unless you are right there with them. Accidents happen and some happen fast. So please if you own a Jacuzzi keep it covered and keep children away from it when you aren't there to go in it with them.
