Is Your Laundry Room Costing You Money?

The price of energy is going up all the time, and you're probably looking for ways to save on your house bills. As it turns out, your least favorite room may be one of your biggest energy hogs. I'm talking about the laundry room.

Now, you can save all sorts of money if you're willing to stop washing your clothes, but I'm guessing you're not looking to go that route (and all the folks you work with appreciate that). Let's take a look at some more practical ways you can save money in the laundry room.

1. Avoid washers and dryers with lots of fancy features.

If you're shopping for a new washer and dryer, stick to the basics. More expensive machines may have extra cycles, electronic control panels, and other fancy features, but they don't wash clothes any better than basic units. Those perks usually just add to the operating cost of the machine. (Not to mention, more doohickeys means more doohickeys that can break, requiring the hiring of a repairman...)

2. Use cold water.

A hot water load uses four times as much energy as a cold water load. You may want to do your whites in hot, but towels and linens are fine in cold. Actually, the majority of your clothes are fine done in cold water, unless they're very dirty (just make sure to use liquid detergent, as some powders only dissolve in very hot water).

3. Don't use "warm-rinse" cycles.

Many of the washers on the market today feature warm-rinse cycles. According to experts (yes, there really are laundry experts), you never need warm water to rinse your clothes, and you can waste $50+ a year on this feature.

4. Nice day? Dry your clothes outside.

Hanging a clothesline between two trees won't cost you anything beyond the initial investment of a package of clothespins from the dollar store.

5. Clean the lint trap.

Assuming suggestion #4 didn't fly for you, and you're sticking to your dryer, at least make sure you clean out the lint trap after every load. The dryer actually has to work harder, thus using more energy, when the trap is full.

6. Don't use the maximum dryer setting.

Unless you're doing a load of towels or other hard-to-dry items, don't use the dryer's maximum setting. A middle setting (between minimum and maximum) works fine for most clothes. In addition, it saves you pennies a load, which adds up to hundreds of dollars over the life of your dryer.

An Introduction To Connectors

Every house or office today is equipped with a multitude of connectors. Connectors are devices used for mating and de-mating electrical power connections.

Connectors are responsible for power transfers and information transfers among machines and people that are spread over different locations. This is usually a mechanical or optical coupling device that provides a demountable connection between two fibers or a fiber and a source or detector. This component connects conductors of one circuit with those of another circuit. It is used to provide rapid connection or disconnection mating with a personal computer board or another connector. Gas Compressors

Gas compressors are mechanical devices that store large quantities of gas inside a tank that occupies a very small volume. There are many different types of gas compressors that feature different abilities and properties. Gas compressors are used from homes and small corporations as well as huge industries and larger operations.

Normally, gas tends to occupy as much space as possible. That is, if a small amount of gas is placed inside a bottle, it will occupy the whole bottle. At the same time, if you place the same amount of gas inside a closed stadium, it will occupy the whole stadium. The compressor takes in gas and forces it to stay inside a tank. Gas compressors can achieve such a high compression rate that even minor damage to the tank of the compressor might result in a strong explosion.

The problem of heat production is resolved by achieving the final compression on a per-stage/level basis. This means that for a typical gas compressor, which produces pressure 343 times the atmospheric pressure, the compression procedure is divided into three stages. In each stage, the compressor achieves a 7:1 compression ratio, and the gas is simultaneously cooled. This totals a compression pressure that is 7^3 (343) times higher than the normal atmospheric pressure.

Gas compressors are essential parts of gas turbines, jet engines, water turbines, steam turbines, petrol/diesel engines, and automobile superchargers/turbochargers. Additionally, gas compressors are used in air conditioning and refrigeration.

Walk-in refrigerators are easy to maintain since they are frost-free. Over time, atmospheric water vapor condenses onto the cooling coils and forms ice. In a refrigerator equipped for frost-free operation, a heater and a thermostat are fitted around the cooling coils. The cooling is periodically switched off and the heater is turned on until the temperature around the coils slightly exceeds the freezing point of water. Once the ice around the cooling coil melts, normal cooling is resumed.

Basic Air Conditioning Repairs

A regular fault that can afflict many air conditioners is when they appear to be working ok, but they just aren’t cooling us anymore. If you find yourself in this situation, then the good news is that it most likely only needs cleaning. It is pretty straightforward to clean the air conditioner yourself, but as with any electrical item, care must be taken. You’d be well advised to thoroughly examine the owner’s manual before you start.

Before you begin any maintenance on your air conditioner, make sure the power is switched off! The shut off panels are normally located on the air conditioner, but if you are having trouble finding then just shut off the power to your home. Also be sure that there’s no debris near the condenser.

Now you’re ready to see what the problem is with the air conditioner. Firstly, take the grill cover off the condenser. Then gently clean the fins with either a brush or a cloth. Shedding Light on Halogen Lights And Bulbs

There are 32 light fixtures blazing away in an average American household. These are the lights in your fridge, hallway, workshop, and porch. Most of these light bulbs are cheap two-for-a-dollar incandescent, screw-type bulbs. This is remarkable because the incandescent bulbs have been around for over a century using the same technology. Although these bulbs still suffice for the lighting needs of the average household, people have become discriminating and looked for other options. Popular choices for many households are halogen lights and bulbs. They are preferred over the incandescent varieties because they emit light that are of whiter and brighter nature. Also, these halogen lights and bulbs generally last longer than ordinary incandescent lights.

How do these halogen lights and bulbs differ from the incandescent lights? Their difference primarily lies on the principles governing their functions. Incandescent lights work by having electricity flow through a fine filament of tungsten inside the bulb filled with argon gas. This action causes the filament to resist the electric flow, which makes the argon gas heat up. The heat causes the argon gas to glow and emit light. Miniscule tungsten particles evaporate and accumulate on bulb walls as soot. As the tungsten burns out, the filament grows weak and ultimately, burn out. There are key disadvantages to this process. First, the soot reduces light emission, resulting in duller light output. Second, the soot weakens the tungsten filament and makes it brittle, hence, promoting faster burnout. Given these problems, incandescent lights are best suited for low traffic areas where soft lighting are better appreciated like the bedrooms.

The function of halogen lights are similar to those of incandescent bulbs, but with key structural differences. Halogen lights and bulbs are composed of peanut-sized and pressurized bulbs inside larger outer shells. The inner bulbs are halogen chambers. The halogen from these bulbs direct the evaporating tungsten to the filaments. As a result, the tungsten filament is constantly rebuilt. Decreased outer shell soot maintains bright light output. The rebuilding of the tungsten filament also makes the halogen lights last longer. The brighter and whiter light of the halogen bulbs make them suitable for high-traffic areas like hallways, living spaces, and work areas.

Jacuzzis - Hot Tubs

You will not believe how good it makes your tired worn out body feel. I have the water temp set at 102 degrees in both the winter and summer. I know people who set the temp lower in the summer or even turn the heater off. Not me, I like it hot at all times. I turn the jets to hit the spots that hurt the worse and just let them hit the area. The hot water and jets works on my body and relaxes me. I found that going in the Jacuzzi, not only helps with the aches and pains, but relaxes me, that I get a good nights sleep.

To me, a Jacuzzi is a lot like a swimming pool. You need to check the chemicals in them and change out the filter. I am very lucky that both my Jacuzzi and swimming pool uses the same kind of filter.

Jacuzzi's are fun to have but you have to be careful with young children. I wouldn't advise letting children in a Jacuzzi unless you are right there with them. Accidents happen and some happen fast. So please if you own a Jacuzzi keep it covered and keep children away from it when you aren't there to go in it with them.

Cascade Dishwasher Detergent - What You Need To Know

Electric Water Heaters Have Heating Elements That Can Fail: Here's How To Deal With Them Quickly

Description of What an Element Is
Most electrical heaters, though not all, have two elements. One on the upper half of the tank and one on the lower half of the tank. These elements can be either high-watt or low-watt elements. Heaters are made so that the lower element works most of the time. The upper element comes on only when a large amount of water is used inside the tank. Elements rarely come on at the same time. Compartments on the side of the tank are where you can find the location of the elements. These compartments have thermostats although the upper element usually doesn't have a thermostat. The upper element is preset to be 120 degrees. It shuts off at 190 degrees if it ever reaches that high. There is a red reset button at the compartment which can turn the element back on if it overheats the circuit. If you only have one element it will be at the bottom of the tank and act like the upper element I just described. Thermostats work for many years on water heaters with usually no problems.

Sediment
Sediment build-up occurs very slowly, usually over several years. In an electric water heater, this can be detected by a bad sulphur odor or by lower electrical element burnout. The lower element is in the lower half of the water heater and is the apparatus that heats the water inside. Sediment inside the tank can pile up so high that the lower element is buried in it like an avalanche of hard snow. This causes it to overheat and burnout. Your showers and hot water will run out in half the time they used to if this happens.

There are two types of heating elements; a high-watt and a low-watt heating element. Which one you have inside the tank can cause sediment to produce faster or slower. The low-watt heating element is far superior. It has twice as much surface area and is not nearly as hot as a high-watt element. The lower heat still heats the water just as fast but produces far less sediment. If you ever replace a bad element, install a low-watt element in its place.

Elements are either bolted or screwed in to the water heater. They both come with a rubber or plastic water-tight gasket as well. If you remove the element for cleaning, install a new gasket as well, especially if the old one is hardened. If you have screw in heating elements, wrap the threads in teflon tape. Remember to turn off the power before working on elements. Immersion of the element in sediment can cause it to fail. Also, sediment can itself encrust around an element. Galvanic corrosion can cause an element to fail as well. It's rare that enough sediment would encrust itself around an element to cause it to burn up. Sediment usually flakes off an element naturally, but then the lower element can be buried. High-watt elements almost never encrust with sediment and make most sediment slough off to the bottom of the heater. A low-watt element may become encrusted with sediment though. I still recommend the low-watt density element for all its other benefits. If you have problems with elements burning out often, they may be cleaned. A toothbrush and some vinegar is all that is needed to clean elements. Galvanic corrosion can also occur between the copper sheath of the electrical element and its steel tank surroundings. This causes the joint to rust. The anode rod inside should protect against this problem. If you replace elements and they only last a few months, then the anode rod may be at fault and not the element.

You can do this by mixing up a batch of white vinegar and water for smaller appliances. This gets rid of stains in coffee makers and odors as well. For larger appliances, bleach mixed with water should do the trick. For cleaning ovens, (if they are not self-cleaning) a regular oven cleaner is advisable.
